I have Gameshark and I can load SOME backups. By the looks of this board everyone has alot of success using Swap Magic with a Flip Top. My bro has this modchip (lucky him) and he can load the games I can't load. So is Swap Magic better than Gameshark? If I were to get a Flip Top, is there a possibility I can screw up my PS2 while installing it?

Ive never used Gameshark before.
But I love swap magic aye :) I havnt had one problem with a game yet, (only if your dealing with Dual-9 games you have a problem and you have to rebuild it). But besides that, everygame Ive tried so far has worked.

And with the fliptop, I heard its pretty easy installing it, But I havnt tried it myself since I have a slim pstwo.

Hmm maybe I should try getting a Swap Magic and Flip Top..my PS2 is getting old anyways, might as well void that warranty or something.

You can do swap magic without the flip top- therefore you don't have to void your warantee or run the (quite substantial) risk of ruining your console.

If you have an old version PS2 (the fat one), you can use a slide tool with swap magic rather than the flip top case. They are often packed with swap magic.

If you have a slim ps2 (the new ones), you can use either the magic switches or magic keys tool sets. Depending on what version you have, you may need a certain kind. There are also often packed with swap magic.

Both of these options carry much less risk of damaging your console than replacing the case does, and don't void your warantee.

Keep in mind that swap magic will not allow you to play copied PS1 games on your ps2, like modchips do. You will need Breaker for that, luckily it works under the same principle and you can use the same tools (slide tool/magic keys).

And before you buy from some random web retailer, keep in mind that many will charge you and never send you the stuff you ordered. Look around the forums, quite a few people have been ripped off on sites such as xboxcovers.com and, of course, eBay(NEVERNEVERNEVER buy anything electronic from eBay). I have always ordered through UltimateConsoleGuides.com; they have excellent support and free shipping (always a plus) although they are sometimes out of stock. Before you order from ANY merchant online, send them an email and make sure they reply- if you have to wait 2+ days for a response and it's very cryptic, assume they are not legit and do not order from them.

Brilliant!

So I'm assuming the Flip Top (which is optional) is just for some games that require the disc to keep spinning?

The flip top just makes it a lot easier to swap discs.

What risk? Replacing one cover for another? Its hardly risky.
There's far more risk involved using a slide card, since you can VERY easily break the gears of your drive tray, and knacker it completely, or do a lot worse damage considering the laser is in there too!

Right. I agree completely that the slide card is hard to learn. But the magic keys are, essentially, idiot-proof. Not to incinuate that you're an idiot. They're just safer for the ps2...

The risk of messing up your ps2 comes from dropping/getting something inside while the case is off- a paperclip or a little water could wreak havok on your console... Or of messing up while installing the case and breaking something off/scratching something.

Why do some places say I need a non-solder modchip or slide cards? Do I need one of those for Swap Magic?
