I recently purchased a Daytek DVR-950T with a 250G HD. It seems to be a very nice unit except for one huge problem - the video quality is terrible!

I connected the unit to my StarChoice satellite receiver and then to my Sony KV-36FS100 CRT television using Monster THX certified S-video cables. The video quality I witnessed could best be described as very poor. When the TV is displaying darker coloured images, pixels are very evident, and video quality is terrible.

The manufacturer suggested swapping out the S-video cables for RCA cables because "even S-Video is a cable that gives you better picture, sometimes it trys to shoot out too much detail and ends up with lower quality." I can not understand why!?? I did try it and video quality does not get any better. Please note that if I run an S-video cable directly from my Satellite receiver to my TV (bypassing the DVD Recorder) the video quality is acceptable and near perfect.

I then wrote back to the manufacturer to advise that switching to RCA cables had no effect. The reply was, "That?s pretty odd, since it only displays analog I understand that picture quality isn?t so great as HD, however it seems that your particular unit has weak tuner."

Can anyone make any sense of this? I'm not sure where to go next, other than to return the unit. Do you have to sacrifice video quality when you use any DVD Recorder? Can you not hook up the component using the input and output S-video jacks provided?

I don't consider myself to be a hardcore home theatre junkie, but I can tell the difference between acceptable, and poor video quality. Thanks in advance for any and all info you can offer.

Hooked mine up Nov 10 06 and am very pleased with all the functions and features.

Using a digital box from our local cable service and it works well with no loss of signal quality. Recording in SP mode.

A big jump up from VCR days.
