DVDLab pro only supports MPEG input files, so you'll need to convert the AVI to MPEG-2. There are loads of programs that can do this, but i mainly use TMPGEnc DVD source creator.
http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/dvdsc.html
one of the good things about it is that it has an option to export the video and audio as separate files, so you can import the original video and the the new audio into DVDLab pro separately.

It is a movie that is 2 1/2 hours long. The file for some reason is 1.4 GB.

is this the input file or the output file? if the input file is 1.4 GB that sounds right for a 2.5 hour movie in AVI. If the output file is 1.4GB, then that is very wrong. If it's the output, what are your encoding settings? make sure it is set to output to 99% of the DVD's capacity. (not 100% 'cos that can cause problems when burning). Download CPU-Z (google it) and run it to find out your system specifications, then post the info on the CPU and RAM. You could also try Winavi, it's the fastest encoder i've used, but (as far as i know) it only outputs to multiplexed files, so you'll have to wait for DVDLab pro to de-multiplex the audio from the video in order to replace the audio with the new wav.

I dont understand this at all. "it only outputs to multiplexed files, so you'll have to wait for DVDLab pro to de-multiplex the audio from the video in order to replace the audio with the new wav. "

-Start VisionExpress and click on MAKE MOVIE
-Add the movie to the VIDEO track
-Add the new WAV file to the AUDIO 1 track
-Right click on the work area of the VIDEO track and click PROPERTIES (or double-left click)
-Change the Volume to 0%
-Right click on the work area of the AUDIO 1 track and click PROPERTIES (or double-left click)
-Change the Volume to 100% (if the sound seems low, increase to 150% - I did this with Miami Vice)
-Now click NEXT and you are ready to burn!
This i found off someone else on another forum i use but the thing is Nero takes 4 hours. i dont want to use Nero. i did this by using my new wav file for the movie then i use the original AVI.

Sorry, multiplexed means the video and audio combined into one file (in your case .mpg). TMPGEnc DVD source creator can output the audio and video sparately to a .m2v file for the video, and a .mpa file OR a .wav file for the audio. When you import .mpg file(s) into DVDLab pro, it asks you if you want to:
Demiltiplex the files to it's elementary streams?
this means to split the file(s) into separate video and audio. If you want to use the replacement audio, and use Winavi, you will have to click yes, and wait for DVDLab pro to demiltiplex the file(s), and then import the replacement audio into DVDLab pro. If you use a program that can output to elementary streams (.m2v and .mpa OR .wav) then you only need to import the .m2v for the original video and the replacement .wav.
about the speed, it should be taking quite a long time with that system (no offence) but not 18 hours, make sure you havn't got anything else running while your converting, and make sure you don't have any viruses that could be eating up system resources. And give Winavi a try, it's got a free trial so you can see if it's any faster without having to pay anything.

Converting.
1) Open Winavi.
2) Choose the largest circle with 'DVD' written on it.
3) Select the .avi file.
4) Set where you want the output file to go.
5) Make sure 'DVD' is selected from the drop-down list.
6) Click 'Advanced'
7) Make sure the settings on the 'DVD' tab look like this:

8) Click 'OK'.
9) Click 'OK' again.
7) It will start to convert, close the preview box to slightly speed up the encoding.
NOTE: the ouput file will have the original audio, this is supposed to happen, we'll fix it later on.
11) When it is converted, open 'VTS_01_1' in media info. You will get a window like this:

12) Look in the 'First video stream' box, there should be a vairiation of this line:
"7000 Kbps, 720*576 (4/3), at 25 fps, MPEG-2 Video (PAL)"
At the end it will say '(PAL)' or '(NTSC)', remember which one because you'll need it later.
Authoring.
1) Open DVDLab Pro
2) Choose PAL or NTSC depending what media info told you.
3) Choose 'Normal'
4) Click OK
5) Close the tips dialogue.
6) Click 'Import Files'
7) Locate and select the VTS_01_1 file created during the converting process.
8) This box will pop up

9) Click 'OK'.
10) DVDLab pro will separate the audio file and the video file, this may take some time depending on the length of the movie, system specifications etc.
11) Once this is finished, Click 'Import Files' and locate and select the new *.wav for the audio.
12) http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/7990/4jc4.jpg
13) I assume you have used DVDLab pro before, and thus know how create the menu's and make the DVD ready for burning etc.
