just got a sony pcv-rs310 model computer with a dvd-rw, what media do i use to make copies of movies?

Read the messages, lazy bastard! :0) Anyway, find out the model # and max burn speed (2.4x or 4x) from your system specs. If your drive is -RW, it should be able to burn most 2.4x DVD-R and DVD-RW media. Check your model # and compatible DVDs here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdmedia

Sony's are very particular about the media they play. Look at the following Sony site and click on the section "media compatibility:
