I finally broke down and purchased the complete 3 seasons of Star Trek the Original Series and of course I am making backup copies for my protection in case I do something stupid with them (as I am apt to do sometimes). I got to Disk number 7 of season one and AnyDVD done its thing, CloneDVD could not. Read error on menu 6. Tried it several times, no go. Tried AnyDVD Rip and nada, same thing, locked up my computer.
I get to looking at the disc and it has a scratch on the outer edge. It would not wipe off and it was the only blemish. Now, what do I do. I sure it plays just fine, but the only way I know of to remove the scratch is a rubbing compound. I use Novus compound for plastic and its EXTREMELY fine, however, I know if I use it, I will be buffing fine scratches into an otherwise perfect DVD surface.
I decided to risk it and it just about killed me when I looked at my once pretty surface, if I had ruined the disc, I doubt I could have replaced it.
I put it in, ran CloneDVD and it finally read the entire disc. I am ONE lucky camper! Have at least one scratched up disc, but I am able to copy it for prosterity sake at least.

Well, now I am curious. If two programs can not read through an apparent scratch, why would a third like decrypter do the job. Still has to use my same drive, and hardware.

Borhan9, That did not explain how one program you mentioned can do what others can not, read through the scratches. I am familiar with cleaning, familiar with AnyDVD, familiar with the updating to stay current, but you seem to think one program can do what the others can not, and I am curious why you think that, and if there is any emperical evidence that using the same hardware, same player, same laser, why that particular program can do what others can not.
The reasond why I lnow some programs work better than others is cause i have used different combinations of software and different combinations can do different discs.
But mainly I change the first step either usind different decrypting programs. from DVD Decrypter to DVDFab Decrypter. Sometimes the engine can do and break structure that the other can not due to one being updated and the other not anymore.
It is true some discs are very badly damaged and beyond repair if you dont physically repair them or replace them. My advice to anyone if you buy a DVD make a backup copy for safe keeping.
