We all know how rough kids can be with things like dvds but if we just keep making backup copies for them they will never learn how to take care of their stuff. Maybe after ruining their favorite dvd a couple of times they'll learn to treat their stuff better.

no, they'll just whine until you buy them another copy. why waste your money, anyway? if you go along those lines, take it away if they destroy the backup.

Good point taylor30, however, what if you have more than one child (grandchild), not fair to the others, is it? Many go OOP and are hard to find. Anyone with children know they love to watch their favorites over and over and over. Mesmerized.

I'll keep the originals safe and sound. The backups are shared between households and I don't have to worry about lost (remembering who has what) or destroyed dvds.

I would think the happy medium would be to make backups, give them to the kids, and if they wreck them, make them work or sweat to get one last copy. And if they ruin that one, that's it. Taylor30's point has crossed my mind before, but, not having kids, I never really thought about it much. It makes sense though.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

I finally added a LOCK on the DVD cabinet.

My 2 year old opens the DVD player, and runs in the living room with the DVD media in his hands, saying Elmo is done, Elmo is done...

Man there's so many hand and finger prints on it, CSI Investigators would have a blast at it :)

At least it's 1 DVD at a time now, he use to open the cabinet and run like hell with 3 or 4 DVD in his hands, wanna watch this, wanna watch that :)

Sorta don't mind making the back ups as of the 8yr olds and up have to pay for the blank media and sit down for the Quality time to make their own. Teach and learn and have the fun.But for the younger ones thats why the back ups, to try to show how to respect their disks. My little 2 pennys. Chris

DVD disks surviving intact on road trip, few and far between.
I'm going to keep backing up road DVD's for a while.

i dont have kids but i would copy the dvd, make it look like a total real one with nice printing and everything. i wouldnt tell them its a backup. if they break it ill tell them they have to earn it back if they realy want it. if they work hard ill make another copy and give it to them, but then i also give them the money from the hard work they did so they get both. then i tell them next time they get to work for it for real. one strike.

if the kids are realy young and cant understand the importance of how to handel a dvd properly or simply cant seem to keep a dvd working then they dont get to handel the dvds. simple. you break them, you dont get to use them unsupervized untill you can prove you wont break them anymore. if you teach them that youll just keep giving them copies they will learn at a young age that properly handeling dvds isnt important. i know thats kinda the reason for macking backups but for my kids the backup insurence polocy will only cover true acidents, not them acting stupid and leaving the dvds out all over the place face down.

ill also teach them at a young age that if you ever so much as touch the read side the dvd it wont work. ill drasticaly exagerate the fragility of dvds. that should teach them.

well all you have to do is kinda keep a eye on the kids who use the disks, and if they keep messing up the disks just don't let them handel the disks untill they can use them right, works everytime
