I purchased Punch drunk love, about schmidt, the hours, and catch me if you can the other day, and as with all my dvds I make svcd copies, but with every one of these dvds my dvd rom wouldnt read them, and after monkeying with it for quite some time it would read a movie in powerdvd, and lock up, try and reload it and it doesnt recognize it. when i try loading it into smartripper when it finally did notice the dvd, when I selected start, it would sit at 0% the whole time, I loaded up dvddycrypter, and it would read at 0.5 for about 3 minutes and then stop and just keep retrying. Now I figured my dvd rom took a crap on me, but I loaded up another movie up of mine, (the Banger sisters) and it handled it just like every other dvd ive ripped. I am confused, any ideas

Windows XP Pro, region free delta 12x dvd rom, I also tryed updated the ASPI drivers, but no results.

they were all just released. I was reading other posts and someone had ripped catch me if you can, one thing i was thinking was that maybe they are all dual layered dvds, and my rom cant handle that.

Your 'ROM' will be able to handle DVD-9 okay ..

Maybe try DVD Shrink 2.3 (which is free) to rip & compress with

well it doesnt even read the dvds most of the time, so wouldnt that be a hardware issue, not a software issue? I am thinking maybe its just my dvd rom. any clues on how to increase the performance of my rom?

Have you tried playing the disc using powerdvd/media player first to unlock the drive, then opening smartripper/dvd decrypter to see if that helps?

as for powerdvd, its not the problem just ripping, its a problem reading the dvd in any player, i believe I mentioned that in the first post. i havent tried firmware, i thought that only knocked out the region codes.

RPC1 will make region free but firmware itself is not always RPC1...

It flashes your drive in whatever way the firmware was written to do to the updates !

Read the URL I left above for more info

I have tried ripping Catch Me If You Can without success.

Have tried all the suggestions on the forum but it keeps stuffing up. Tried DVD Shrink but got a CRC error, tried DVDDEcrypter but that keeps stopping at the same spot.

Some of u guys have been successful in ripping this movie, could u please give me some help as I have run out of ideas.

Thanks heaps

In DVD Decrypter did you check the box 'Ignore Read Errors' ?

Have u tried Movie-Only & Full-Disk combinations of rip to test ??

Herbsman,

Checked all those boxes, but it tried about 500 times and was stuck on 56% for about 45 minutes so I cancelled it.

Excuse my ignorance, but what did u mean by:
"Have u tried Movie-Only & Full-Disk combinations of rip to test ??"

There is a small file on the disc in standard format, while the Divx format uses a different CRC algorithm that makes regular players and computers think that the data is all corrupted or just trash. DVD players (including personal computers) will run the stub file instead

In a request for more specifics...here goes

Using my Read Device Artec DVD-ROM ran DVD Shrink (latest version) and disc read no problems< I took out the extras and prob some audio tracks I didnt need and then backed up the main movie. No problems. As far as the burn process used Nero DVD Video Wizard, put the files in the folder and burned on Iomega DVD burner (really a NEC just under new hood).

20 minutes later done and movie plays fine in Samsung M301 standalone and a CyberHome player dont recall model off hand.

It may be possible that there are different originals circulating that may have been pressed at differetn plants or at different times.
