Just wondering what the most common problem with the V4 is, keep getting disc read error, but I wanted to put a HDD in it, and thus will not be able to boot it. I suspect laser but want other opinions before I buy a new one, cheers. I also have a v12 that works but f**king hate swap magic now.

try cleaning the laser before changing it. other thing you could do is adjust the height of the laser but, you'll eventually need to replace it.

Yea tried cleaning with neat alcohol and resetting laser height, so it's pretty much wrecked. Do you need the laser for the memory card exploit if you put HD loader on the mem card?

Yes you'll need to replace the laser in order to use a MC Exploit.. PS2 needs to be able to read the trigger disc..

Now if your PS2 can still read PLAYSTATION Games then you'd be able to put in a hard drive for now until the laser dies out but if it can't you'll need to replace it..

Sorry to bring up an old subject but where would be the place to look for a new laser, and how easy are they to install? I heard some talk of protection for the laser also. Thanks for any info.
