Hi, I was thinking of buying the Pioneer DVR-105 (DVD-R/RW Int IDE OEM) DVD Writer.
As I understand it, this is an internal writer. Unfortunately I don't have any room to fit it internally, and external writers are way more expensive.
Is there a way I can still use it externally? Maybe by using some sort of external casing, and then using USB 2.0 to connect it to the PC.
Would appreciate any advice.
Cheers.
PS. Unless anyone knows of a decent external DVD-R/RW for under £250.

Yeah, look up USB enclosure. There are lots of them, and you can find some good cheap ones.

Not sure if this unit is available outside Japan, but Pioneer does an external firewire version of the A05 called DVR-S502. I use it with my laptop and its been dandy.

I'm using a Sony DRU-510a in an external Firewire case.
Has anyone has problems (and resolved them) with this type of config?
For example, because the case has it's own Firewire to IDE converter (adaptor?) do you need to worry about DMA or ASPI etc etc?
I want to upgrade my firmware but I'm not sure what effect the firewire/IDE thing will have.
Any help much appreciated.

My external firewire Pioneer was happy with win2K + SP3 + Nero 5.5.10.35. Didn't load any other APSI stuff or fiddle with DMAs. Writes at 4x with no hassles.
The firmware WAS a problem. I had to write a few nasty-grams to Pioneer about the lack of an updated firmware for it. It finally came out a couple of weeks ago. I think they out-source their firmware dev, so that's probably why.
You can always remove the unit from the case and update it via IDE I guess. I was too lazy to do that. :)
Rgds,
jnihil.

the one I used is a legit non-hacked version of 1.30. The firewire version is a little out-dated compared to the IDE version.

Hi,
I just installed my Pioneer DVR-105 (DVD-R/RW Int IDE OEM) DVD Writer with an external USB 2.0 case.
I plugged it in, started up Windows XP, and nothing happened.
If I look in My Computer there is an extra CD Drive there, but whenever i put a disk into the drive, nothing happens, and if I click on the drive icon, it just says insert disk.
I thought of maybe installing firmware, but when I try to do that, I get an error saying it couldnt find the location or something.
No disks came with the drive, so Im not sure if Im suppost to install anything.
Can anyone help, please?
