I apalogize in advance for the detail I go into. I know that you folks are computer wizards and understand all this stuff, even if I dont.
Computer: HP media center pc m260n/ Pentium 4 2.6ghz w/hyperthreading, DVD +/- RW that came with system.
DVD Media : Sony DVD+R, Verbatim DVD+R
Software: Windows XP SP2, AnyDVD, 1 Click DVD Copy, Nero(came with cd drive that I upgraded to)(uninstalled Nero 3 days ago), Roxio MyDVD Essentials 8.

Problem: Up until about 6 days ago, I have had no issues whatsoever with backing up my movies. All of a sudden I have a bunch of coasters. Tried to back up Lake House, 16 Blocks, and The Sentinel. Not one them backed up properly. 16 Blocks has blank spaces on the burn disk in between areas that are burned. Is it time for a new DVD burner? Or is there a software issue at play here?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Seems odd that it just started happening. I would make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner, the latest version of all the programs... AnyDVD especially. I wonder, did these problems start suddenly when you started a new batch of blank media? I'm kind of leaning towards a bad batch of discs since you haven't changed anything in your software...

I have the latest updates for all the software, problems started using Sony DVD+R's and continued when I switched to Verbatim DVD+R's. The Sony discs were from a spindle that I had multiple successes burning in the recent past.

Well, get rid of Roxio. It doesn't get along with Nero and Nero's the much better program.

Does this happen with all your burning software? Can you burn CDs? If so, I'd suspect it's your burner, though a bad driver could also do that.

One thing you might want to try before shelling out dough for a new one: Go into Device Manager, find your DVD burner, and uninstall the driver. (make sure you have your Windows disk around; otherwise, skip uninstalling the driver). Then, shutdown your computer and open it up and unplug the DVD burner - cable and IDE, both. Reboot. It won't find the drive. Shut down, reconnect the cables (make sure they are firmly plugged into both the drive and the motherboard) and restart. Let Windows find and "reinstall" the drive again. If that doesn't fix your drive, it's probably the drive itself.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Uninstall the drivers for that DVD-RW drive. Windows xp should hook them back up.

Uninstall both roxio and Nero from your pc.You'll have to run special programs to completely rid all remnants of both programs from your pc:

Roxio Zapper:

http://www.microadvantage.net/downloads/zapper60.zip

Not sure of which Nero version you have, click on the correct link for 6 or 7:

http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/us/Nero_6_CleanTool.html
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html

Remove them through control panel-add/remove programs. Then open up the zapper to get rid of the remaining roxio files. Do the same to Nero, then run the cleantool.

Then download Nero back on again, but leave out the INCD packs.

HP uses a lot of different drives. What does device manager show you for your DVD-RW drive. It may tell us the brand name/model #/ and also the firmware version? Neroinfotool will also tell you.

Could be drive-maybe a firmware update, could be software conflict. Nero and roxio do clash. It's the extra packets they contain. Roxio has the packet called drag to disc. Nero has the packet called INCD.

If you can post a Nero burn log, that'll help. It'll show most of that info, but leave out the serial # at the top of the log-starting like: 1A23-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx.

Will it play dvds?

I can play DVD's no issue there. I have Nero 6.0 suite that came with a cd rw that I bought and installed.
My DVD is an HP300n with the driver version as 5.1.2535.0

The link for the roxio cleanup tool doesn't work.

Try this new link:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

HP 300N: The latest firmware update for this drive is 3.20,however-some are Re-Badged NEC 1100A's. Your current firmware will help figure out if it's a ligit HP or rebadged NEC.

I'm not sure about the driver #'s you posted.

True enough, true enough...but it's worth a try if the burner can be salvaged. It doesn't cost anything to uninstall drivers or reinstall a program he already owns. I suspect you may be right though.
