Hello everyone,

Like 1000 people before me, I'm here for advice on setting up my PS2 to play from the HDD. I've used the search functions, and I've read alot of great info today, so I wanted to clarify a few things. First off, this process seems very complicated... much more than I thought it would be, and there were hundreds of terms I had to get familiar with, but after reading many tutorials/guides/faqs, I think I know the basics.

First, here's what I have.

-A FAT PS2, purchased probably 4 years ago. I'm not sure on the exact model, but it's SCPH-30001/97000, and has 10 screw holes on the bottom, if that helps.

-I have the FFXI HDD, but I plan on buying a bigger one because I don't want to delete the FFXI data, and I want to be able to store more games than it can hold. I've read suggestions and links on which HDD's to consider for this. I have a network adaptor as well.

I should mention my PS2 has a hard time reading PS1 discs on occasion, so that may be a factor depending on how I want to boot HDloader.

Ok on to the question(s)...

As mentioned, my PS2 has a hard time reading disks... particularly PS1, but some PS2 as well, which is why I want to do this.

From what I read, the first thing I need to do is download the program Winhiip, which will allow me to format the new HDD, and transfer the game images onto the HDD. This seemed pretty straight forward in dan168's tutorial. Ok so far?

Then, I have to burn an image of HDloader (0.8B is the newest and best?) onto a CD.

Here's where it gets tricky for me. I DO NOT have a mod chip in my PS2. I don't have any kind of magic swap or anything else to enable imports or backups on this PS2. What do I have to do in order to make the PS2 recognize the HDD, and load games from it? This part is really the most confusing. I read all the info regarding the memory card exploit, but it still seemed like you need a mod chip.

I have no problem modding the PS2 if that is the only way to get this set up. But if there's a way to do it without modding the PS2, that would be preferred. If I can somehow get the exploit loaded on the memory card, it eliminates the need for a mod chip, no? However, if I need a PSX disc to be able to boot each time I try to launch HDloader, that might be a problem because my PS2 won't always read them.

I guess I'm just looking for the best path to take in my situation. I need convenience, but I also don't want to spend a fortune to do this. The thought of bringing my PS2 to a friend's house with 30 games on it, and not having to bring over a box of DVD's is very appealing.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me! I realize a lot of questions on here are asked a hundred times, and I did my best to gather all the info I could before posting.

Cheers!

well you pretty much know everything you need to. Yes, you do need to have a ps1 game boot to load hdloader off of the mem card using the exploit and since your ps2 doesn't read ps1 games very well that might be a problem for you. I'm not an expert on the exploit so I can't exactly help you with advice on how to get the files onto mem card but, there are tutorials which I'm guessing you probably saw already. The most convenient way would be to get a mod chip and download an image of hdloader (there's also DVD images of this if your ps2 has problems reading ps2 cds) or some chips like dms4 or matrix infinity have a built in launcher (not 100% sure if matrix has this but I know DMS4 has it) but, it's also the most expensive way. I guess it all comes down to you and finding the right balance between convenience and price.
