i am about to bite the bullet and finally attempt to upgrade my firmware tomorrow so i can play my back ups. I have read and read and read about what to do but the only thing i'm worried about is this hex editing part of the drive key. if i get this wrong is my drive gonna be a large paper weight? (my drive is a samsung)

also what do i need, I have a spare sata port on my mother board, i have the xtreme firmware file, MTK flash. is this all i need to get the job done?

i just don't want to mess up my box, i know i probably wont but get paranoid about this stuff. So are you saying with the 4.1 version i odnt have to manually edit my drive key?

Cheers for the link, i'll have a look there and let you know how I get on. cheers

From either v3 or v3.2 and up has a auto editing program included with the download. So you can use that to edit your orig.bin. But you may have to hex edit your mtkflash to work with your sata port. There's a sticky at the top of the forum about it.

How long should it take to flash the new firmware? When i copied the orig frimware back to disk via the mtkflash it took about 2 minutes. i have now gone through the process of putting on the new firmware and once i type in the mtkflash w X41A.bin it just gives me a message saying 'mtkflash by joseph lin' and a cursor is flashing away but i cant do anything. Has my pc froze or did i do something wrong?

After it sat like that for 5 mins I turned my pc off and tried the process over again but now when I try it I get the message ' no drive detected' how can that be when i have just done a back up of the original firmware?

I tried it again and it detected my drive but when i tried to flash the file i created in the 41a package it kept saying there was an error reading the file, so instead i hex edited the 41a file myself and flashed it and all seems fine. it boots up games as normal with no problems. I guess the decider will be when i burn a back up tomorrow to see if it works.

thanks to anyone that helped me especially 98sohc

it was much appreciated
