I realize this has probably been posted about many times before. I know that I can make the conversion with an adapter, but I believe that only works if I currently get a still black and white picture on my television.
My television is extremely old and when I plug in my NTSC ps2 I get a rolling picture. I believe the frequency is wrong for my old tv. I would like to know if I would get a still picture if I bought a new tv, or would it not change at all. I don't want to go and buy another tv and still have the same problem.
sounds like you ps2 might be bad, the age of the tv shouldnt mater, are you triing to connect it through the COAX or the RCA inputs, if it is those two then all should work fine, if you are triing to connect through the rabbit ear antenna screws then expect a poor quaility picture you might need a new converter
of course the best answere is a new tv but the other options are cheaper
Thanks for replying. I know for a fact that my ps2 is not broken because I had it in the USA not long ago and it worked great. It really is a very old tv though. I can't even get the BBC here because the frequency is completely wrong, tv acts like it has been de-tuned when it works fine in the London area.
I connect it through the coax where the aerial goes, it doesn't have anything else. My xbox works fine on it.
If my ps2 isn't faulty, is it guaranteed to work on a newer tv? I just don't want to spend the money to find out it still has the same problem.
test your ps2 on a freinds tv and check it first i guess, but you never know electronics are funny some times i have an old ps2 that acts up regularly and will only play 50% of ps2 games, no movies or cds work but they are so cheap anymore might just want to upgrade for less stress
PAL tv, unmodded NTSC ps2. I plan to play NTSC games only.
I just tested it on the newer tv in the living room and it managed to find the ps2 and broadcast a still picture. I wonder if this is applicable to most newer tv's. If it is, I would have no problems in buying one.
you could get a fully wired scart cable and try it with that on the old tv but, from what i've read most PAL tvs (even new ones) need the scart cable to display the picture properly and with colour but, if the new tv you tried the ps2 on in the living room is displaying properly with colour then I guess all you do need is a new tv (but I'd still test out the scart cable on the old tv just 'cause if it fixes the problem you'll save some money)
it does not display with colour but the picture is still and doesn't roll around at all. From there I believe I can just add a regular NTSC to PAL converter to make the colours appear.
Does anyone know if the term 'NTSC compatible' is significant in the description of a tv being sold on ebay? Does it mean that the tv can be used in the US to receive signals, or that it operates at the necessary frequency for other NTSC hardware?
just curious. I think I might end up buying a new tv no matter what. Thanks so much for the help.
