I flashed the Samsung drive with xtreme x4.0a (w/ mtkflash) and when I place the backup copy of my game (used memorex DVD+R DL, burned with clonecd at 2.4x) nothing boots up. Did I miss a step?

Do your originals play, though? Also, 4.1 is out in case you missed it.
4.0a is, by default, in fast read mode. With that you get faster loading times, but if you have a bad burn or less-than-par media (memorex) you're also gonna get more errors when trying to play. You can try and put the drive in slow read mode to see if that's the problem.
This is right from the nfo:
Quote: FOr Xtreme 4.0A default backup Read Speed is same as original game disks 12x. When Original Game disk is booted, all subsequent backup loading will be at Quiet/Slow Read mode, Original Game disks are unaffected. Turn console off/on to reset back to Default backup read speed (12x). Quiet/Slow Read Speed is for quiet operation and/or cheap DVD+R DL media.

So are you saying I should re-flash with xtreme x4.0b instead of x4.0a? I heard about 4.1 but this is my first flash and want to get this down before I upgrade. Is it recommended to have 4.1 now?

You can start by just putting the drive into slow read mode. That'd be the easiest. Just boot up an original, then eject and load your backup.
I wouldn't worry about 4.1 yet. Let's make sure you can get everything working, first.

I tried to boot up original, eject, then place backup into the drive. It reads, then says open tray. I also tried to flash with x40b.bin but it just freezes and doesn't allow me to flash. Any suggestions? Thanks alot for your help btw.

The original will play though, right?
With 4.0 and up if you want to reflash, you have to put the drive in 0800 mode first.

Memorex really is crap media. I had some work for me, but with a couple of packs later none would work on my Samsung. Try burning with a Verbatim and see if that works.

Yea, I tried to reflash w/ x40b and it still did not work. I already have some verbatim being shipping to me on the way. Is there anything else I can do at this point? When I get the verbatim disc what is a good recommended speed to burn them at and should i reflash back to x40a or stay at x40b?

Burn at 2-2.4x and make sure you're running the latest firmware for your burner, too.
Which burner are you using?

That's what I also forgot to mention, I have a memorex dual layer burner. Will this be a problem? Or should I get the pioneer branded one?

You have to set the booktype to DVD-ROM with DVDinfopro before burning with Clone CD. What the exact model of your burner? Most Memorex drives are Lite-ons which work well for most, but not all. Still with my experiences with them in the last couple of years I avoid anything with the name Memorex on it except for CD-Rs.
