OK, I have a slime-line PS2 V12 with the DMS4 SE chip and the Neo Fix XIV (since it came free
with DMS4). About 3-4 months after installing everything (during which time the PS2 worked
great), the PS2 stops reading a game mid-play and when I look to see what caused the
problem, I see the lens are burned.

Now, I know there's no other option but to get the part replaced, but what I wanted to ask is:
What caused the problem? I had the Neo Fix XIV and I was using 1st class media (TDK
TTH02), what the hell went wrong? I really don't want this to happen again.

I wouldnt say those TDK's are first class media, they are at best average. I have had probs using them for movies so i stay away from them now.
It can only be media really, nothing else stuffs the laser up unless maybe a bad laserfix install. When you get a new laser try using Verbatem or Taiyo Yuden, have always worked for me.

Well, once I get the part replaced, how could I check if the laser fix is properly installed? As
long as the PS2 is capable of reading after the install?

Anyway, now that I read the Best DVD Media thread again, I see that TDK is low grade 1st
class; I should get better media. So should I get verbatim -R or +R? Does the PS2 have any
problems with +R? They seem to cost the same at wal-mart.

I don't know why but I started laughing when I read your topic name.

Anyways, for the Verbatim DVD+R it really just depends on your ps2. Whether it likes it or not. I've found that the dvd-r's work better with Verbatim though. I would just buy the dvd-r's to be safe. I rarely have problems with this brand and dvd type. If they have any small packages, like a 5 pack (if they even make them), get one and try it out. Good luck.

Well im not sure about laserfix where did you get it done?

DVD+R are better IF your DVD burner supports booktyping/bitsetting (same thing) if it can then you can booktype them to DVD-ROM and they will work just like originals. If you cant booktype then get a few of each and burn the same game to a - and a + to see which works better, PS2's are very picky about these sorts of things - works best for some, + for others. V12 will load both but one might work better than the other.

I installed the laser fix and the cip myself. The chip works great, and I only know that the
laser fix doesn't prevent me from playing.

I can't try out +R versus -R because the lens burned up, but I guess I'll play it safe and go
with -R.

Also, I don't know if my DVD burner supports booktyping, how do I check? More importantly,
does changing DVD-R to DVD-ROM help keep the PS2's lens from burning off?

I was meaning check when you get a new laser...
DVD-R cant be booktyped, get a program like DVDinfo Pro and see what functions your burner supports to see about +. Or if you already have Nero find the setting where you can change it, if it lets you set booktype you can if it says failed you cant. You could also try DVDdecryptor if your burner is of any of the brands in its booktype tab then try setting it.

I dont really know about laser fixes, if the ps2 works then it should be as well.

Oh, I can only booktype DVD+R. Does it really make a difference whether it's R or ROM? It's still the same media.

Im not really sure how it improves compatibility, but most of the time it does.

So it helps with compatibilty rather than keeping my PS2's lens from burning up? I better stick with DVD-R then, thanks.

I guess I have to repair it, and then hope that it doesn't break down in the next few months. Hopefully I'll be getting the PS3 by then.
