I am trying to add subtitles to a video file. The video file is originally 699mb but 80% into the file it say not enough space and the size of the file is about 100gb now. Is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening?

You need to select something under compression or you will get raw RGB24. That's 3 bytes per pixel.

No. Not unless you can specify what you want. Selecting pretty much anything under compression would result in an AVI smaller than 100GB's though.

You want a file the same size as the original?
You want a temporary file for re-encoding?
You don't mind if it is bigger than the original since you care more about quality?

Now that is easy to answer.
It isn't possible.
You can't have the same size and quality.
1) you are re-compressing with a lossy codec. Using a lossless codec would blow the size up significantly.
2) you are adding subtitles which are hard to compress.
3) if you are using VDub filters to add the subs, then you are converting to RGB24 and YV12-->RGB--YV12 is not a lossless process.

To have the same size and quality. Stick with softsubs.

To hardsub and have the same size. Just set the same bitrate as the original used. Don't expect the same quality though. At least you can re-use the audio though. So no quality loss there.
