Hi, I'm using high quality GO5 DVD-Rs. When I copy and compress a DVD it gets jumpy around 3/4 of the way through the movie. Then it often leads to an "unable to read disc" error. This happens in the 2 DVD players and PS2 that I have. It also happens using other cheaper DVDs. Is there a limit to the amount of compression that a single layer DVD can handle?

You say it is happening on 2 different brands so the brand of DVD may not be the issue. have you tried burning DVD's you have done in the past that worked fine? I suppose it could be a burner issue. I also suppose it could be you are compressing them too much (to answer your question yes you can over compress) and if you did over compress (my expereince is over compressing causes skipping and freezing and not giving a disc error into the movie (maybe at the beginning but not 3/4 of the way in)

Try ripping a movie you have shrunk in the past that worked fine and reburning it. if that movie does it I suppose that would narrow it down IMO to the burner and media and not how much you are shrinking it.

I know as of late more and more movies have more on them and require more compression so i suppose you may be over compressing.

Here are some reasons why "DVD it gets jumpy around 3/4 of the way through the movie":

1) Using poor quality media
2) Burning too fast
3) Burning too close to the disks outer edge
4) A possible incompatibility issue between the player and media

Try these suggestions when backing-up/burning

1) Always use good quality disks (you state that you are)

2) Don't burn too fast, stick to 4X or 1/2 the rated speed of the media (ie..8x disks, burn at 4x speed)

3) Don't burn too close to the disks outer edge, have shrink produce smaller files sizes of 4300MB. In shrink goto edit--preferences, in the preferences section choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.

4) Read your player's manual and make sure it is able to recognize and properly play the media you're using, if it's not listed, then try and use what is recommended. If your player is old, consider buying an newer one with multi-format playback ability.

Start with the above suggestion and see if it solves your problem.

Cheers;)

Thanks, I never burn faster than 4x. I'll change the file size and see does that help. Do you know is there an upper limit to the size you can compress?

I set all of mine for 4350, but I would definitely not go over 4400.

Thanks, but what i meant about an upper limit was how large can the file be to be compressed to say 4.3GB eg. can you compress a 12GB AVI to 4.3GB (I'm making a home movie and it's larger than expected)?.

If I understand you correctly, you have the raw captured file. That will be fine once it gets converted to VOB files for DVD. That is about what size an hour worth of footage is on my camcorder if I capture it raw.

Shrink should be able to compress/transcode a 12GB file to fit onto a single layer DVD, but as kchev stated, the .avi file must be first be converted to a DVD-Compliant format before shrink can recognize it and work with it. I'm not sure what file size would be too large for DVDshrink, but if you really want to find out, you could experiment with it.

For converting .avi files to DVD complaint ones, you could try using a free app called avi2dvd. Get it here along with a guide;
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6405.cfm

If you're going to work with large files, pay attention to shrink's quality section as seen here;

Make sure you enable/check both of these options:
1)Perform a "Deep Analysis" before actually encoding the DVD to improve video quality
2)Compress video with high quality Adaptive Error Compensation

Doing so will greatly improve video quality, here are some suggestions for the AEC (Adaptive Error Compensation) setting on various compression levels:

@90-99.9% compression - Max Sharp
@80-90% compression- Default Sharp
@65-80% compression- Smooth
@65% compression- Max Smooth

Cheers.
