I read the "manual" for want of a better word for the manual of Swap Magic 3.8.

It says you can boot from a USB device (I have a spare external HDD). It also goes on about renaming the program to SWAPMAGIC.ELF thingymajig. What is it going on about? What exactly do I rename to that?

I backed up some of my games and am ready to play them off the hard drive instead of the discs, but am at a loss as to what I need to do. I am a noob, and yes, I am totally stupid so be gentle.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer me.

Yea man i have a thread about that too using an iPod to boot games i dont know how to do it myself. But maybe you can help me. I can only burn games by the MDS file but not the ISO. I have no idea why that happens. If you wanna talk more give me your AIM if you have one.

2 boot off a usb.
Make a folder called "SWAPMAGIC" Exactly how its written...
Then chuck in your elf file you want booted up inside the SWAPMAGIC folder and call it "SWAPMAGIC.ELF"
Stick the usb stick in the ps2, then run swap magic.
If your stick/drive is compatible, it should boot your elf file instead of going to the screen where it says "Please swap disc etc"...

This is what the manual says. But what is and ELF file???? When I rip a game from its original dvd, I see no ELF files? I see an ISO file! or I can make a daa file... or even a bin and cue file. Even if I mount the image there is no ELF file to change the name of.

So what am I doing here? Sorry to ask probably such annoying questions. We all have to start somewhere right?

SM isn't used to boot games from anything but a disc. The ability to boot from a USB device is meant for compatible homebrew such as SMS.

Thanks goes out to theridges for the userbars :)

Ok thanks. Coz I've been having problems burning discs that work. Seems that nothing I use seem to work. I occasianally get one that does work, but mostly not.

Would have preferred to try and boot from a hard drive if that carried on going. Are there any ways in which I can use a hard drive to boot the games?

Well since u have a external hdd. U can use usbextreme/usbadvance. But the compatible of games suck for them. I have not got one of my backup games working on an external :)

Look up usbadvance and you should find an elf file, and then look up tutorials on how to use it. U will need to copy the game onto the hdd from the pc using a specific program etc... The steps are too long for me to write up.

Hope that helps...

I noticed (to the one who has a problem burning discs), you ocassionally get one to work? Maybe it's your media? I was using Maxwell DVD-Rs, which one occasionally didn't work, another was lagging disgustingly, et cetera. My second batch of DVD-Rs, are Sony DVD-Rs. They work SO MUCH better than the Maxwells. Try Verbatims. I hear they're the best; they don't have them at my carrier though. Yeah man, try switching your media. It helped me tremendously.
