I'm going to try and do the firmware hack for a friend of mine. I've looked at all the tutorials and we think we can pull it off. I just gotta make sure of two things:

he has a Hitachi drive. How can I tell what version drive it is? and does it even matter?

Whats a good SATA card that will work with his Hitachi?

There is a site called http://www.360drives.com/list where about 200 people have entered what drive they have and the firmware version.
To tell what firmware version your friends Xbox360 got, you need to open the case, and thereby void your warrenty, the firmware version is written on the top of the DVD drive.
All number except from 0078fk will work, a hack for the 0078fk haven't been developed yet.

There are lists all over the internet with compatible SATA cards, and if you don't want to get a SATA you can always use the Team Xecuter X360.

It was a great help.

What is the main thing that we should avoid doing when we try the mod? The last thing he wants is a stuffed 360.

Just read, read and read some more, even though you are tired of reading, and again, read some more. And just follow the tutorials closely, then everything should be okay, and you and your friend should be playing games in no time.

If you want a painless way to flash a Hitachi drive.. First make sure it's not the 0078 firmware. Once you determine it is not that drive, then get a PCI SATA card. If you manage to get one with a SIL3112 chipset then the rest is easy. Turn on the 360 with the drive hooked up to the SATA card.Boot the SLAX CD to get the Hitachi in modeB, reboot the PC and boot into windows. Flash with the Hitachi-LG OPA 2.2 ( I haven't seen 2.3 but heard it was out) and be done. Nice and simple.
