I'm having real problems playing backups of DVD's on my PAL PS2, the copies work fine on my regular DVD player and on the software DVD player on my laptop.

I'm using DVD Shrink 2.3 (which is fantastic), Nero 5.5, a Pioneer DVR-K11 in my laptop, AQ DVD-R Media (have ordered some Mirror ones but they haven't arrived yet).

Is anybody having the same problems or is it just me, and if so where am I going wrong.

your problem may just be that the ps2 does not like the disks or the way it is recorded and the only way to find out is to try different disks first then try a different program. i have a problem with mine not playing in dvd players but play in my ps2.

If you have a PS2 v7 PAL I'd be surprised if it didn't play DVD-R or DVD+R but probably wont deal with any RW in whichever format.

Are you burning back up's with a menu ?
I've heard this can be an issue to PS2 owners..

When you say Mirror discs , do you mean the brand name Mirror or discs with a mirror finish on the top ? (only asking cos I have had good experiences with Mirror -RW media. My mate & my Dad both own a Mirror 110 DVD Player which plays DVD-R well enough)

After all said & done , you may need to modchip/upgrade your PS2

Thanks to you all

Cazer - I'm trying different disks today they are being delivered from ebuyer

Herbsman - I am burning with a menu as on a couple of disks I wanted the special features. But I have tried DVD X Copy xpress which is great because of the speed and quality but this only copies the movie and again did not work on the PS2 but did on my normal DVD.

The new disks are Mirror (brand name) so hopefully these will work a lot better.

I was thinking about a modchip to the PS2 but didn't fancy doing it myself, I have found a couple of website that install as well so perhaps I will get it done.

I havent gone mad by the way the reason I want them to play movies on my PS2 is that it's in the car (didn't want to keep the originals in there) and keeps my son very quite and happy on long journeys!!!

Thanks again for all your help.

How do I make sure which version of PS2 I have?

It's to do with the serial number on the plate on back of the PS2

I'll see if I can find a chart that can explain , but first what country are you in..as I have a guide to US PS2's ?

UK bought it when they first came out in this country.

Have just burnt a copy of Minority Report using the new Mirror disks (which as you said are v.good), apart from the fact that it only took 1/2 hour because they are 2x the disk played perfectly in a software player so the acid test will be if it plays on my PS2 will try that tonight.

Thanks again

Maybe, maybe-not! but i did some testing with the PS2s and found that disks burnt with Nero wouldn't boot, but 'prassi' disks are no problem! 'RECORD NOW-MAX' is prassi with a new coat on, maybe worth a try?
I have been chipping PS2s for a while now and found probs with the very early versions, if you bought yours within the last 2 years, it shoud be fine.
If you do chip, then buy the genuine 'MESSIAH 2' yourself, and just pay the 'chipper' to install it, the worry is that there is a new chip out there known as the messiah 2 tw (TYWAN) and it is vastly different to the genuine thing. Going rate for just chipping is about £40.00, £70.00 if you want the chip as well.

The new disks failed in the PS2 but worked perfectly in an X Box?

I will try Prassi tonight to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks

As far as I am aware, a PS2 won't read a Dvdr unless it's been modchipped. And as said earlier in the thread the only chip woth considering is the messiah, I've got one in mine and it will play anything on any media (imported dvdr, dvdr games and cdr games) with no disc swapping etc. It just boot's like the original would. In my own experience the best burning software to use is Stomp RecordNowMax. Good luck with it.

Maybe the older ps2 won't, but i buy a new machine for people about once a fortnight. before the chip is fitted, i test every mode first, and that includes dvd-r movies. version seven machines definatly play dvd-r movies before they are chipped, maybe just the older ones didn't.

i had a v4 with a no soider mod and all my movies worked with and with out menus. i had to get a new one today and it seems to play dvd-r just fine as well. i use DVD Decrypter with some other programs and burn with DVD Decrypter or Nero 5.5 with k-hypermedia on a pioneer 104. you mite want to look into your firm ware for your burner that could couse some problems.

doug4l,

A long time ago, I had a very similar problem as you.

I was using Nero to burn my back ups. Played fine on the settop (Pioneer 444) but not on the PS2.

Answer ?

Create a disc image of the backup, and used Ulead Movie Factory (This allows you to burn an "Image"

Never had a problem since.

Backups play on ALL machines now.

a ps2 DOES play dvd-r without being modded, just wont play dvd-r games. If it is an early version ps2 then it might not play all media. To check what version u got, try the following link -
http://www.modchipshop.com/ps2/v5v6v7.htm

I had a v5 ps2 and it would play ritek and memorex gold for me without a problem! Only problem with ps2 is you can never be sure if it will play the disc!

I must apologise to anyone I misled with my statement "As far as I am aware, a PS2 won't read a Dvdr unless it's been modchipped", but as I said this was as far as I was aware. Perhaps the Messiah chip makes the console less fussy which media types it will or won't read a movie from, as all the films I have on DVDr wouldn't play on my V6 PAL console before chipping but played perfectly after. The two media types I use are both Datawrite, yellow 1x and Grey 1x-2x Classic, perhaps these were at fault.

Thanks to you all.

Have now tried all sort of things all to no avail, but I think the real problem is that I have a v3 PS2 as I bought it when they very first came out.

THe answer is to buy a new PS2 pre-chipped.

Thanks again
