I have successfully been using DVDDecrypter followed by DVDShrink to copy Region 2 DVD movies for use here in the US. However, I am no longer able to do this. I use InterVideo WinDVD5 to play movies on my computer. It too seems to be in trouble. Could I have somehow changed the region in which the reader and writer in my computer works? And do I have only so many changes that I can make? I am puzzled.

But my question is a little different - or at least, I want to ask another question. Normal TV DVD players sold in the U.S. will work with DVDs from only Region 1. My understanding is that such a DVD player can be changed to run Region 2 DVDs, and changed back later, but that thiese changes can be done only about 2-3 times. Is this so?
Then my further question is: does this also happen to computer DVD players/burners? I am in the U.S., am in in danger by playing or copying DVDs from Region 2?

Don't have an answer for you first question.

You can manually change your burner or Rom's region, typically 5 times. After that you must have the manufacturer reset the Region for you...which will cost $$$. Playing DVD's should have no effect on this setting. There is software that will make your backup copies Region Free which will allow you to watch your movie on your standalone player with no consequence.

1)Here's a couple of programs that will set your pc drive to region free. They both run $40,but AnyDVD would give you a lot more bang for the buck. AnyDVD will rip all the newer encryptions-dvd and cd and set drives region free. Sometimes there's a discount here at AD and Cdfreaks.com. It's a very nice program with no extra steps involved.
I'm not sure about DVDIdle. It's $40 as well.
2)Another option, there may possibly be a region free hack for your burner's firmware.
What's the Brand name and Model# of your burner?
3) Last resort: New Drive
Once you get the drive set to region free, rip using DVD Shrink-but make your backups region free. They should play most anywhere.

Hello , your right DVD players sold here in North America, are preset to run DVDs at Region 1, as also DVDs sold here can only be played on those players, this is to stop importing BLA BLA, now with your burner you can change the Region setting and usally only 5 times this is allowed, you do this by opening my computer, right clicking on the burnner, select properties, hardware, select the bunner you want to change or check if you have more than 1, or click on the properties again next to trobelshoot, now some these will be different but what you finaly want to see is a tab that says DVD Region, hit that and select Region1,
Now if all that is as it should be, well then what you may nave done was set your AnyDVD to region2 by mistake, to change this you open AnyDVD and select setting and your defalt settings should be region1, now if thats ok,
Then your final place to check is here, you get down to coping and your using DVD Shrink you hit the backup button and a box opens the next tab will say DVD Region, you want to select REGION FREE, this will burn the DVD with no region you can playback this copy anywere then
Now for me a somple and clean way with no coasters is as follows
1)latest copy of AnyDVD,
2)click on AnyDVD and have it running in the background, on the Taskbar
3)insert DVd and close prop box asking if you want to play this DVD
4)open DVD Shrink and select open top left read DVD
5) now if it reads and gives let say 65% quality I will hit back up, or I will hit RE-AUTHUR and when the new info comes up I will go to THE MAIN MOVIE, click and drag it to the left panel, then check the tab Compession Settings, this will tell you whats in the main movie and the new quality %, if you want finally you can remove the other Languages and Subtitles if you want, usally I leave them and then hit back-up, now in the new panel these are you final settings once made you leave these they want reset themselfs, DVD Region check Region Free, the next 2 leave alone, the last ~~very important~~, if you are using DVD-R/RW set the burn settings to 2.4X, if you are using DVD+R/RW
set your burn to 4X, this will give you great playback quality and no skip or freeze during play back,
6)Now hit the next and you are on your way 20-30 mins you will have your Region, Encyption free DVD Back-up that will play anyware, on almost any player in the world
7)finally you will allways have a copy of the last movie Backed up on your hard drive , but this will be deleted and replaced each time you make a copy,
8)one more thing I usally turn off my screen saver and I dont use the computer while doing DVD back-ups I find I get a cleaner back-up with no glithes,
I have made over 2000 backups and in that I have only had about 10 coasters and it do to bad media. And theres has not been a title I have not been able to backup
Hope this long winded TuT helps

Yes your righr AnyDVD removes the Region, but you also have the option to uncheck that box and select a region, now that could have happen in this case, he unchecked that box and selected a region and now when he copies it burns with the wrong region on it, then he haves a problem with playback
