Help needed - my DVD-R/RW drive won't recognize blank media anymore...?

I just tried to back up some data and it won't recognize my blank CD-R or DVD-R discs anymore. It just kept telling me to place a blank disc inside.

After getting that message a couple of times, I had to do an emergency eject as it wouldn't even open to let me take out the disc. Once I did that emergency eject the tray would no longer open or close on it's own.

I rebooted and after waiting a while the tray started working again. I then tried a couple of music CDs and it read those fine... so I tried the blank media again, and I got the same result as the last time.

Now I am using the same media I've been using all along, Memorex CD-R and DVD-Rs as well as some unmarked DVD-Rs I bought off the web - I think they are called DVD Pro or something like that, and I didn't kick my PC around or anything, so what could be causing this problem?

I have a Toshiba SD-R5002 if that helps... perhaps this is a recurring problem with this drive?

I dunno... but please help!
