I want to take a DVD-ROM drive out of a Windows ME machine and put it in a machine running XP. The XP machine currently has a CD-ROM drive in it.Will XP take care of this swap? Do I just physically install the drive and let XP handle everything else? Also,if you could, anything to change with the plugs,or is it just unplug from one and plug into the other.Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

Putting any old drives in a machine running Windows XP does not have any problems because Windows XP comes with its own set of drivers and fixes any problems automatically it is truly plug and play. You just may have to be sure that one drive is on master and the other is on slave. That should be it really.

Thank you for the helpfull reply. There is a DVD R/RW drive along with CD-ROM drive currently in the XP machine. I will replace the CD-ROM drive with the DVD-ROM drive. In your opinion which drive should be the master or does it matter? I am assuming in the original set up the DVD-R/RW is the master.

In my opinion the DVD burner should be the master. Why are you going to have to DVD drives?? When it only takes one drive to make a backup of a disc??

Just curios...

Thank you again for your help. I was told (please correct me) it might save a bit of time when backing up a movie. I could save the files from the DVD-ROM drive right to the DVD-R/RW drive rather than going to the hard drive first then back to the DVD-R/RW drive? Now I'm wondering if this is correct or not?

There are programs that can do that. But it is recommended to go through the hard drive process because with programs that got directly from disc to disc do not nesaccarly break through the encryption. So its better to rip the files to the hard drive and then back it up to the blank media.

I'm sure glad I asked and you answered. I think I'll just leave everything as they are. Why ask for trouble. Thank you for your help.
