does it go "missing" when you are doing something in particular?

Do you have any other spare IDE's? is it on slave to something like a CD drive?

check if the pin of the IDE cable corresponds to the HDD. See if it is loose.then if none of that works try to buy another IDE cable. :)

As mangpepe said, make sure the hardware is correctly setup and then make sure theres no software conflicts with the drive letter. Do you have a virtual drive installed thats using the same drive letter?

To check right click on My Computer, choose Properties, click the Hardware tab and select Device Manager. Once in there then click on DVD\CD-ROM Drives and have a look thats there not anything in there that looks like it might conflict.

If that doesnt work then just give the drive a different letter by going to Run (in start menu) and type 'compmgmt.msc'. Once in select Disk Management and then right on the D drive (once it appears) and choose Change Drive Letter and Path and then just rename it to whatever else.

This might resolve the issue or at least show if something else is trying to use that letter.
