Firewire HD for the fat PS2

Has anyone explored this option? Is any group exploring this option for fat PS2s? An external HD option (non-USB) might be more convenient for some people. Also, Firewire throughput is 400Mbps which translates to 50MB/s peak, this is faster than the Ultra ATA-33 internal connection. Also, SATA drives are slowly replacing Ultra ATA drives and they may no longer be available in the future in the largest HD sizes so it might be prudent to switchover at some point to Firewire enclosures.

Then there's the issue of the discontinued internal PS2 network adapters which are selling for inflated prices on ebay, you'd no longer require one with this setup and could instead buy the USB network adapters selling for fat PS2s as the replacement to the original internal ones (cheaper and altogether easier to find). I don't see a downside other than not having everything enclosed within the PS2. It would make file transfering easier since you could just unplug it from the PS2 and connect it to the PC to transfer games and then plug it right back into the PS2 to play them.
