Matrix Infinity & DMS Pro are probably the best chips on the market currently and they play all back ups DVD5 & DVD9. As far as all DVD types are concerned ( I assume you are refering to + or -) it really depends on what format your PS2 likes - it's a matter or trial and error. My two PS2 (slim and fat) take it both ways but I prefer -, although for no particular reason.

Have you only modded an xbox?
I ask because the PS2 is INSANELY more difficult than an xbox but the dms4 chips do actually work with all consoles, the top three ones are the dms4's, the matrix infinity's, and the crystal chips. Here's a link:

I have actually done lots of soldering in my life. Plenty of experience soldering boards, extremely small parts less than 1/16 inch in size, etc. Soldering isn't an issue. But I will check out that site on those chips and look at my best options.
