a guy at work wants to sell his older sony receiver.its 110w x 5 with all the hookups.the problem when you plug it in it throws a power protection warning and does nothing.is it fried or can be saved?i was thinking of putting it in a spare room or garage.

I don't know that anyone can answer your question, there are any number of reasons why this can happen. The only thing I would suggest is to make sure all the speakers are connected and connected properly...the most common reason I've seen for amps going into safety / protect modes is that somewhere, wire are broken, two wires are touching in the back of the speaker at the terminals, in the back of the amp at the speaker connections or old broken speaker cable. I would try replacing all the wires between the speakers and the amp and make sure they're clean and not touching anything but its terminals at the ends. This is a frequent cause for this but certainly not the only one.

On the contrary....If you mean that no speakers are connected when you turn it on, just an amp with nothing connected, that could be the problem ... creating power with nowhere to go is overload. Connect some speakers, even trashy ones with the volume way down and see if it stays on when you turn it on. Don't spend good money if you don't know if it will work though unless you're sure of what's wrong. Some things cost so much to fix, you're better off buying it new for just a bit more. So too, it depends on the system; sony makes systems that go from cheapy stuff to very good. Then there is the age factor...AVRs have come a long way in just the last three four years.
