I was just wondering whether playing backups on a PS2 would damage the laser, over a long period of time.

I have a ver 5/6 PS2 with a messiah chip and I am using DVD+R media.

I have noticed that with some games the laser makes more noise when loading, as if its trying alot harder to read the data.

I was just concerned to whether that over time this would damage my laser.

Please advise, thanks.

No it wont damage the laser. The reason it takes longer to read is because the data on the DVD R is harder to read than that of the pressed originals. Run your original through a DVD Speed program and then run your back up and you wll notice that the original, if not scraped, reads at a constant rate, however, the back up will be all over the place.

Try also getting DVD Idle which means the disc spins at a much lower speed when reading and thus preserves the drive:http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvdidle.cfm
