I was reading that you need to patch FF12 to properly play on the HDL. Can someone help me with a step by step procedure on how to do this I have done the memory card exploit and my hdl is updated to version 8b thanks in advance.

Ok guys, Halloween passed and Final Fantasy XII is out there.
For all you guys who use HDD to boot your game, here's a help.
If you install the game just like that, it will show only blank screen.
Here's how to fix it.
Get the patch from this site.

Then you need the patch joiner. Get ppf-o-matic from this site
http://halo2.filefront.com/file/PPFOMatic;24225 Then just join the patch you d/wed from the first site and the FF-XII image file and click ok.
Use WinHiip and enable mode-3 then install it to your PS2-HDD
Run the game and enjoy :D

Could anyone tell me if a FFXII backup disc would play WITHOUT a ps2 Hard drive installed? Do they still need some kind of patch? How would I apply those without a ps2 hd?
it did for me, tested just that tonight. swap magic got through the intro, loaded a game and a few minutes of play smooth as butter.
working on the HDloader angle, tho, cause im picky and hate swapping alla time...anyway, if you burn on a good quality disc it should work just fine, as i understand it.
