I am using:
Verbatim DVD-R 16x (MCC 03RG20 according to Alcohol), Alcohol 120% vers. 3 build 1.9.5 3823, Burner Lite-On DVDRW SHW-1635S
I am having some trouble backing up my PS2 games. I am doing it as described on the forum, using Alcohol.
The first game I tried (older DVD with some wear: NBA Jam) worked fine.
Even though Alcohol told me just before writing NBA Jam that it can't use 12x speed because the media does not support that (the burner as well as the Verbatim DVD- both support 16x!). It then told me would burn at 6,4X, I was suprised due to the odd number but went ahead and it worked.
The next (like brand new) games (Punisher and Ultimate Alliance) both did not show a label when I created the image (instead of for example NBA_Jam Alcohol just had a NEW label for the image). The image was made (even though rather small for Punisher 1,73 gb and 2,73 for Ultimate All.) and I thought all was well.
When I tried to wirte it the same thing as with the Nba game happened (6,4x) but since it worked before I went ahead. It burned very slow sometimes below 1x and only averaging 5x at the end (to me it seemed even slower).
Both of those backups won't run.
Then just for fun I tried burning the same image with DVD Decrypter and even though it also was extreemly slow (average write 1.4X max 6.0x!) it now does work!? But how can I speed it up? It writes very choppy the buffer goes up and down, writing slow then fast and this happens without me doing anything else (no other programs etc).
I am wondering why they are not working using Alcohol.
Does it have to do with the label of the image (the NEW issue)?
Is it the slow speed at which they are recorded?
Or is it some new copy protection with these games?
And why won't Alcohol burn at more than 6,4x?
Hi mrroboo
For a start try 8x disc's as 16x not suitable for PS2 backups & what is your hurry ? Slow & steady is the best way to go with Ps2 b/ups..
There is heaps of info on this subject in this forum check them out saves having to wait for a reply.
thanks for the replies (i forgot to refresh the post in my browser doh!).
First of it is hard to find 8x media at electronic stores nowadays so I did not intentionally buy 16x it was just the only thing offered.
I also tried to set the writing speed to 8x and even 4x (even though there were some posts here that said if you have 16x media you should burn at 12x anything lower will not lead to as good results), but it did not matter to decrypter it still burns at 6x (max) 5x (AVG)so it won't even go to 8 and does not stop at 4!!
Strange huh? well at least with decrypter you can make all backups with alcohol you could not.
