I have a problem often when splitting large .avi files using VirtualDub (or Nandub or VirtualDubMod or when using aviSplit). After carefully following the tutorials, (holding down the shift key when moving the slider and using the 'home' and 'end' keys appropriately, to split the large .avi into two parts, it often ends up that while the file for the first half is OK, the file for the second half has no video and only audio. The original large .avi file has no problems with the video or audio at all.

What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks for anyone's input on this.

in virtual dub use the home for start, move slider to desired position then hit end.then from audio select direct stream copy, & audio source. then from audio tab select direct stream copy, then from file select save as AVI...then you repeat the same process for your second half moving the slider to the position where you ended the first half and hit the home key, then repeat the same process as the first

In case you have too much of trouble using VD, you could try AVIChop or AVI Splitter. They are easier than VD.

EDIT: LOL, snaggs, use the edit button instead of posting four times in a row!

I thank all of you for your reply, but I am doing every step of this process just as you are recommending, yet still, when I split an .avi file into two smaller ones, the second of these two is a file that has only audio and no video. The first file is always just fine.

I have all of the settings for audio and video set for direct streaming and I am sure to have all home and end points at keyframes. I have tried to do this four or five times using VirtualDubMod, Nandub and avisplit(which uses Nandub). Frustrating as hell.

Something about the video is affected by the splitting so that ther second part cannot be rendered. The second part of the split has only audio and no video when played in Media Player and Winamp.

thats a bummer...sorry to hear that it's not working..are you clicking "clear selection" from edit tab befor continuing with the second half..??... well.that pretty much leaves me out of segestions...good luck... I wonder if it's a windows AVI conflict.?? have you disabled windows from reading AVI files.?? I think that is a must for any AVI active PC..
