Instead of using AR max could i not just use xploder V5?

ive now managed to get my slim ps2 so i can swap disks. but for the past few hours now ive been really confused as to were to begin with these exploits. im mostly interested in getting a FTP for my ps2 but im still at a loss as to what i need and if i need something before hand to get the FTP working such as a HDloader or some other program.

im also wondering if there is anything that can be done with a xploder CD. i dont have a AR max CD and i dont know where to get hold of a copy so thats why im asking if these exploits can work with the xploder disk.

any help would really help
