My X360 came with a Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L drive which I have been trying to flash for some weeks now. Finally, I got the Team Xecuter Connectivity Kit and got Windows to recognize the drive properly. I tried several versions of Xtreme and GaryOPA and stuff, but only Birdy worked in the end. I then discovered that my X360 could play backups (even DVD+R DL bitsetted ones) but it no longer recognized original discs! So I hooked it up on my PC again and tried to reflash it with several firmware versions.

Long story short, X360 displays the animated logo and then hits an "error" black screen. Of course if I switch the console on without the drive connected it works fine, but not much point to using the X360 if I can't play games. My drive no longer ejects the tray (wether I power it via the console or the computer), and Windows cannot "see" it anymore. Specifically, it is not listed as a DVD drive in Hardware Manager, even though a "USB Mass Storage" device appears under "USB Controllers". Disk Manager however, lists a device as "Disk 6, Unknown, Unreadable". The only available function is "properties", which reports it as a properly working USB Device.

What do I do now to get the drive to work again? I have the option of working on several systems (clients, servers, DOS, WinXP 32/64, WinServer 2000/2003...) so don't hesitate to suggest anything.

If the drive is beyond repair as it is, can I get another one? I saw some listings on eBay, but they have a v46 firmware (my drive has a v47). Can I get one of those drives and update its firmware to a newer version (at least v47, or -hopefully- v56)? I read that to use another drive I need to sync it with my X360's motherboard key. Unfortunately I have not managed to find any specific info on this. Can you help me learn anything at all about this procedure?

I knew of course that messing with firmware could lead to this, but now that I am actually in this situation, it's more painful than I thought it would be :) So please, help me, anyone who can.

The Matrix cannot tell you who you are
