good burning speed?

What speed is best for burning PSX games to CD-R? Earlier I tried to burn Castlevania: Symphony of the Night at 12x, and the result was disappointing. Most times my PSX won't even boot it properly, and when it does, sometimes the colours are all messed up, and it usually crashes at some point. Unfortunately 12x seems to be the lowest that my drive will burn, so am I pretty much screwed here?
