Hello Guys. Fellow newb here trying to make a decision on which product to purchase with my tax returns. With all the hype of HD programming, and next-gen video game consoles I believe it's time to upgrade. I'm not familiar with all the bells and whistles that come equipped with this technology. I just want to have the greatest picture quality for broadcast television, xbox360, and HD DVD Players. Some specs are below on what I expect the tv to have.

- LCD or Plasma
- Resolution of 1080p (does purchasing a HDTV with this resolution improve the viewing of say 480p, 540i, 720p, and 1080i?)
- 42" +
- $2,000-$2,100 shipped (location Georgia)
- Will be purchased online / Would like to see this HDTV in person at a retail store

Are their more important specs that I should be taking into consideration? With so many brands to choose from its hard to make a reliable decision. Thanks.

First of all, if you are playing video games, stick with LCD over plasma. Plasma technology still is not good enough to overcome ghosting and burn in of images. That said, I recently tried out 2 models of 42" LCD. I also tried a 42" Plasma, it was terrible with the PC for its images being left on the screen for days.

I then went to an LG 42" LCD because it went on sale at Future Shop for $1999. Well that turned out to be a peice of garbage, 2 of them later, I decided to go for a samsung. The LGs were terrible for stuck pixels, and light flooding from the corners of the screen. I finally settled on a Samsung LNS4092D and I could not be happier with it. Amazing set in all respects!

I'm in the same boat as far as needing a recomendation. What's a good quality low cost 42" plasma or LCD? I don't play video games.

Thanks

I probably just gave you the best one out there for the money in the previous post. From personal experience, if you spend less, you will get what you pay for. Try to stick with something that uses cold cathode backlighting (Sony XBR or Samsung) over the traditional flourescent, you will get much deeper blacks and more vibrant color. The 92 series from Samsung is probably the least expensive out there.
