Big Problem with Sony Dru 500A

WE are complete newbies at this. But, some time ago we got a Sony DRU 500a and after a bit of help here merrily started copying things. Last week when using the drive a message sarted popping up on screen saying "Need firmware flash." We ignored it. However, my husbad wanted a region-free programme so we downloaded DVD region-free, tried it out and got the full version.

The next day the drive copied a film for about 12 minutes then threw it out saying there were errors. We've had problems with disks doing this so we checked them carefully for visible faults, and tried again, and again, and again. So, we looked up a firmware flah site and my husband flashed the drive. It said that this operation was succesful. We copied a disk. It went well. We put in another, 12 mins latewr out it popped with errors.

What is wrong? Is it my drive, the disks, the flashing (although the problem was there before we flashed)? Please help.
