I recently modded my hitachi that i bought in march, my friend just got a new one yesterday, can they still be modded the same way? i heard that on newer drives you couldnt flash anymore, because microsoft did something?

If it's the 0078fk firmware Hitachi, then no. Those can't be flashed right now. If your manufactor date is before August 2006 then you don't have anything to worry about regardless. They didn't show up until August.

You can flash the 0078 drive. It's just a lot harder process. I think you have to remove the black epoxy. Search on xbox-scene.com
I know OPA has a firmware out for it but not too sure on the actual flashing process for this particular drive.

Well technically the chip can be removed and flashed externally. I'm pretty sure no one here is doing that. That's some real hardcore stuff.
