I have a v12 PS2 with a slimtool/swapmagic set. I have been using it to play some import games for a while now. I decided I want to back these games up and keep the originals put away to avoid wear and tear on the disks. I have a Pioneer DVR-106 (4x max), 1.08 firmware, purchased back in 12/2003. When I bought the burner I bought a 50 pack of Ritek 4x(G04) dvd-rs which I still have a few left (shows how often I actually burn dvds). From what I have read on here riteks are not so great so I ordered a 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R(TYG02) from supermediastore.com. They are the 'premium' and not the 'value pack' line, silver laquer top if that makes any difference.
I have been using DVD Decrypter to rip and Alcohol 120% to burn. First 2 games I backed up work fine. The 3rd game, (Mobile Suit Gundam: Climax UC if it matters any) had skips during the opening movie. Game play seemed fine though. I decided to try on a ritek just to see what it did and it played back perfectly, no skips at all during the opening. Hoping it was just a fluke I burned it again on another TY, not only did it has the small skips during the opening movie, it had one skip that was atleast a whole second long. The image turned out to be 4.11 gigs and you can see that the PS2 is reading the outer rim of the disk when it plays the movie. I have heard some disks had issues with the outer rim but I have never heard of TYs having a issue with it.
Ive been looking through more threads here and noticed one mentioned the adaptec ASPI layer, I thought this was a thing of the past but I installed it anyway. I am going to have DVD Decrypter change its settings to that ASPI and try to burn it when I get home and see if that works better then alcohol did.
Would this have anything to do with the fact that the DVR-106 is only a 4x burner and I am using 8x media? Is it possible my PS2 doesnt like TYs? If it may be because I am using a older burner, what are some good burners out right now, preferably ones that allow booktype setting incase I mess with +Rs later on.
I am thinking about putting the image on my usb drive and taking it to my one friends house, he has a newer plextor lightscribe drive and see how it burns, might give me a idea if it has something to do with using 8x media on a 4x drive. I have another friend with a Pioneer DVR-111 I can probably get to burn it as well.
Any possible suggestions for things to try when I get home tonight would be appreciated. I really hope its not the disks, Radio Shack had TDKs on sale 12.99 per 50 pack a week ago and I picked up 4 packs only to get home and find out they were CMC Mags and I had to try 3 different disks before my burner even recognized it had a disk in it. I burned one and 5 minutes later I tried to rip it and it gave me errors and wouldnt even finish ripping the disk! Luckily they took all 4 spindles back without any problems. Now the TYs I got to replace those are giving me issues. I have wonderful luck, I should buy a lottery ticket on the way home!
