Did I break my PS2?

There is something definitely wrong with my PS2. It seems like ever since I used duct tape to cover the laser inside my PS2 instead of the magic key, there's been problems. I keep hearing this whirring spin while I'm playing a game, and the load times are terrible.
For example, I was playing Guitar Hero II. It'd take at least 15-20 seconds to go from screen to screen. While I was in the middle of playing, it'd only run for a second or two in the middle of a song before stopping for another second or two. This would repeat over and over so much that I frustratingly had to turn the machine off.
And in another instance, in FFXII, I'm stuck at a part where an FMV is being played out (right before it, actually). The game completely halts for a good few minutes, then plays for two seconds, then halts once more.
I have no idea what's going on with my system. I don't know if it's the media (I'm using Dynex), but I was using the same type before when I was running Kingdom Hearts II and Disgaea, and they were working just fine. Did the media take its toll on the system, or is it the duct tape causing this mess?
If anyone could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate it. The sooner the help, the better. Thank you!
With regards,
Zack

Why did you put duct tape over the laser?
I suppose there might be some dirt still covering the lens, give it a clean.

I put duct tape over the laser because my third tool in that Magic Keys set, I accidentally bent it, so it wouldn't function normally unless I laid it down with cardboard and tape, so I went inside the system and handled it that way.
What part of the system is the lens, and what should I use to clean it?
Thanks a lot for your help!

the lens is that lens looking thing on the track that goes back and forth reading data off a DVD/CD.
its under where the DVD/CDs sit.

You put tape on the actual laser or did you put it on that switch under the lid hinge? If you put it on the laser itself then yes you would need to clean the laser. If you put it on the switch there shouldn't be a problem that I know of. I have put duct tape over that sensor switch. It is just a small switch under the lid hinge to the left of the laser and below.

I put the tape over this thing, the third picture on the PDF: http://www.swapmagic3.com/Tool_D_installation_guide.pdf
Should I clean that off and replace the tape? Or what should I use to clean it off? Perhaps send me a picture telling me what part I should clean? haha
Sorry, so many questions, but I'd really love to have my PS2 working again. Thanks much for the help. =)

lol, I assumed it was, but I wondered if putting a few pieces of duct tape over the laser caused problems with it. What should I use to clean the lens?
I used a Q-tip and part of a cloth, and it didn't change at all.

So, I should use that directly on the lens? Or around it on the silver part? What would you recommend?
Thanks again.

You've got to clean the actual lens, the little glass circle bit. Be careful but make sure that all the dirt and tape glue that could be on it has gone.
What happens when you put a disc in? Can you hear it spinning until you get a clicking sound or doesn't it spin at all anymore? Are you getting a disc read error?

It spins around frequently when it's trying to load, which gets a bit annoying.
The game loads and everything, but once it tries to run the game, it gets pretty slow trying to process everything.
So, clean the lens I put the tape over. Gotcha. Thanks.

Well, I didn't put any tape on the glass circle part where the lens is. I only put it on the black laser on the left so that it'd allow Swap Magic and the backups to work without that Magic Keys' Tool C. It keeps spinning like it's loading whenever I turn it on. It's such a weird problem, especially since it was working fine prior...

The glass circle part is the lens to the laser, the other black bit you are referring to is probably a switch to detect whether the lid is open or shut (I'm not sure because I don't have a slimline ps2).
Try changing the type of discs you're using and vary the burn speed.
