do I need a mod chip to use hd loader or hd advanced?

No, i have an un-modded ps2 with a 40gb hard drive and it works great.

you can also install hdloader & hdadvance onto your memory card so you dont even need to open your cd tray of your ps2.

how do I do that and where do I get hdloader from is it free? also do I need swap magic to do this?

best to but swap magic then go to http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=elfs and you can find a hdloader.elf or go to http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=hd.html
to find hdadvance.elf

you can find tutorials on how to install these .elf's onto your memory card and run the programs without even changing a disc here http://www.exploitstation.com/articles/independence_cd.php

if you want a ready made iso image i can build the file for you, just let me know the .elf files you want on it and let me know the (sles_000.00) example of a ps1 game that you have.

remember if you want to exploit your ps2 memory card then you must have a ps1 game handy.
