Sharp DV HR300 - cannot record (console footage)

I've been trying to use my DVD recorder (sharp DV HR300) to record my console (xbox) footage.

Setup:
Monitor out (video out) of TV to video in of DVD recorder.

When I record using this setup, the DVD recorder records whatever is being shown on screen. It does work, as I have tried to use it to record TV programs before, and it does record whatever is being shown on screen.

However, when I use this method while having my xbox footage on the screen, the recorder is unable to record (there's a message saying 'cannot record').

If I start recording while being on a different channel (not the one with the xbox), and then change to the channel with the xbox, it records the xbox footage for a very short period of time before it stops by itself.

Does anyone know what I can do to solve this?
