Will programs like avi2dvd and dvdshrink run faster on a dual core processor? Does the software have to be written to use multiple procs or do the procs have some way to split the software?

DVDShrink will use both cores essentially cutting encoding time in half on some machines. Not sure about Avi2DVD.

The CPUs don't define whether or not they split the work..that's up to the software to detect multiple CPUs and distribute the work between the cores as I understand it.

The great thing about (a rumor) from AMD's new quad-core CPUs..is that the supporting chipsets will allow you to throttle back unused CPUs...meaning when you're not going to use all four CPUs...you will be able to under-clock the other cores! Not even Intel's quads will offer that.

Most of the software out there today that does heavy encoding, video or graphics, will use more than one core.
