I would like to rip some of my dvd's to my hard drive so I can call them up and play them at any time. My computer has AMD XP 2000+ cpu and 256mb pc2700 ram. I have a 40gb hd but after ripped the videos will be transfered to my 200gb drive. I may be hooking up pc to tv through svga on 64mb video card so I can watch on tv. Basicly I want to have a video style jukebox if that makes any since. I am not really concerned about having all the extra's from the dvd just movie and good sound.

What programs will I need for ripping? Will i need to change them with some kind of encoder or something? Are these programs free or are there any free ones or do I have to buy some? I would like to keep the movies at a good quality and around 500mb or so. What would be best to save them as? mpeg, avi, divx,?

Thanks in advance from a ripping and dvd burning newbie.

The quality of TV out is pretty useless. Use a program called Easy DivX and it wont take as much of your hdd up. Else, rip with DVD Decrypter and make the movie and ISo file.

How do I play a DVD Decrypter ISo file? Also is there any way to make it smaller. The file is 7.23 gb which is way to large.

Also Easy divx site seems to be down anywhere else to download it or any other easy programs? I would like to keep movies under 1 gig.

Well, I use SmartRipper. I know once thats done you can watch the VOB files on your hard drive using PowerDvd.

Also another SmartRipper feature, you can rip only the streams you want. For example you only want the main movie and probably the AC3 audio. If you ripped only them, then you are saving quite a bit of space.

Not sure if DvdDecrypter has that or not - I haven't tried it. Other thing is, your dvd is probably a DVD-9 disc, so the size is going to be big anyway.

Some time has went by since this post and some things have changed. Upgraded my ram to 768mb ddr and a 80gb 8mb cache 7200 rpm hd but never found a program to play iso's. So I just deleted them and started over. I have dvd decryptor, and VirtuaDub, SmartRipper, flaskmpeg, TMPGEnc Plus, and some other programs. My newest upgrade item will be a 128mb ddr or higher 8x agp video card with dvi & svga output. I have found that the plasma tv's and quite a few projection tv's at best buys and other places have dvi inputs and have great pics compared to svga connections.

For some reason though when i'm decrypting dvd's or in the encoding " I think encoding" I get slight pauses in the movies. Just enough of a pause to be anoying. It only happens with video, the audio plays fine.
