Hi,
I have tried backing-up my Disney DVDs (Little Mermaid, The Beauty and the Beast etc.) using DVDDecryptor. The ripping process proceded flawlessly (or so it said) but when I played back the movie using PowerDVD (v5) I got some strange behavior:
- Beginning of the movie is messed up
- Sound out of sync

Is there a special process to follow in order to backup Disney DVDs?

Thanks.

Power DVD XP4.0 is as good as any other player but sometimes it produces indifferent results until burnt to disc , it is usually no audio but on burning it appears.
I'm not saying that , that is the case here as Disney if they had thier way would make it impossible for you to back up your discs.
Disney are trying to create the disposable DVD at the moment...which is interesting !!!

Try burning your project files to a RW dsc and see if you still have bad results is what I'd suggest

Peace

Herbsman,
Thanks for your reply but I think I have mistated my issue: I have backed-up many DVDs and the Disney DVDs are the ones causing me grief. I do not think (although I need to open the door to a possibility) that the problem is PowerDVD. I think that Disney have a special "copy protection" method.

Anybody else experienced the same problem?

Thanks.

I can do Disney movies fine so far. When you say that Herbsman misunderstood you. Are you stating that the movie that you are trying to play back is on a DVD already?? If o, why not test it on a Standalone, that way we can rule out Power DVD as a culprit.

Hi jldupont,
I joined afterdawn just to confirm the trouble you are having with Disney DVD's. I also have been backing up my DVD collection for quite a while and have never had a problem until now! I ran into this problem with Pinocchio, Lady and The Tramp (1 and 2)Dumbo, Little Mermaid, etc. It seems to be their Buena Vista DVD's only but I can't say for sure. I played it back on Power DVD step by step and it is alternating between English and French during the opening title and credits (video not audio)causing the sound to be messed up. Not only that but if you go to the end of the movies you will see it freezes before the ending and in the case of Little Mermaid 2 it jumps into the movie and you miss about 10 minutes of the opening. I have read the very few threads dealing with this where people have gotton the typical "you need to take out the different angles and uncheck all but the English audio". I have done everything and only ended up with coasters! I have used both DVD Decrypter and Smartripper in both movie and file mode and then stripped them down completely and even made sure that the cells are removed which contain the different angles and still ended up with the same result. The only way that I have found to avoid this is to copy the whole DVD! I use DVD Decrypter and select every file and then use InstantCopy and burn the whole DVD. I use DVD Decrypter, IfoEdit and Pinnacle InstantCopy and have never had any problems until now!!!! You are not crazy, this problem does exist and I think that most of the people out there are like myself and seldom check the DVD's we have burned. After realizing the trouble I was having with Dumbo, I went back and checked my collection and sady found that most of the Disney DVD's had the same problem. Before anybody shoots this down and starts giving advice, try it for yourself! In answer to the trying it on a stan alone DVD, I have 3 different DVD players and it does it on all of them, it is not Power DVD. I have even taken my stripped down ready-to-burn file and played it in IfoEdit and it seems fine, then I burn it and Yeeehaw the trouble shows up! Good luck!

Same problem with Jungle Book 2. Plays fine for 3/4 of the movie then jumps about (freezes intermittently) for about 5 minutes then finishes ok. Does the same on PC or stanalone. Sounds like the same problem. Any techies investigated this?

Ok Here I am again! I did some more research and found this thread from Feb.

In DVD Decrypter you need to select tools/settings/file mode/multi angle processing. Put a check mark in this box and retain angle 1.

jldupont,
I tried this on Lady and the Tramp and it worked. I am about to try it on Dumbo. Give it a try yourself and see if it works for you. I don't understand it because DVD Decrypter was automatically taking out the extra angles so it doesn't make sense but if it works, who cares? Let me know how it goes. Good luck and thanks for replying so quickly.

As a person who backs up all his DVD movies, and I own over 30 Disney, I can verify that they do give sneaky approach to the ripping process.

During a couple of movies, i've noticed that when the ripping goes to the last file in the batch it is actually OVERWRITING the first VOB file!

Which is why I always keep every ripping tool that exist, cause where one fails, the other has always succeded for me.

Sefy,
Do you remember which DVD's gave you trouble with overwriting the first VOB? Which editing tool did you use to fix it? I appreciate the input!

I Only recall vaguely, I believe the first time i've encountered it was on "Lady and the Tramp 2" and also with "Dumbo" and there were a couple more which I can't remember.

What I did was a bit more "harsh" as I didn't use any tool, simply during the ripping, when it was done with the first VOB, i'd rename it, and then when it re-created the first VOB, I renamed the files again, and that fixed it for me.

Yo jldupont!
Just curious if you have had a chance to try the "fix." So far I have successfully burned all of the ones that I was having trouble with! Let me know what happens! My thanks to "framerman" for the cure!

I am currently away on a business trip. I will try the fix when I get home.

Hello everybody,

I have tried forcing "Multi-Angle Processing" and "Retain Angle #1" and so far I have managed to rip
- Beauty and the Beast
- Snow White
without any problems.

Thanks again to everybody.
