Hi, please help. I have looked thru all the guides and forums, followed the links to other sites (for the past week or more) and the more I read, the more I am slowly going nuts!!

Ok lets see:-
I have an intel 4 computer with a liteon ltd 166S dvd rom player.
I have an external Sony DRU 720A dvd burner.
I have a panasonic DMR ES10 recorder to copy stuff off the TV.

I thought it would be simple. Copy stuff off the telly, load it onto the PC, edit it to cut out the adds etc, then use the burner to burn a +/- R disc to play on the seperate Panasonic player.

Taped to a -RW disc as they are the only ones the recorder will write to, put the disc in the dvd rom drive on the pc and it tells me the drive is a cd drive not a dvd drive.

This is compatability right? Is there any way round it. The site with the firmware downloads has one but only for removing the regional code on the dvd rom drive. Do I need to buy a new DVD TV recorder that will write to +RW? or will I still have the same problem. Is it the '-' that the drive doesn't like or the 'RW'.

Sorry if this sounds too basic. I know some of the other threads are a lot more technical.

a simple google search led me to this site and read all about your panasonic dmr es10..... many unhappy customers!
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/custome...2&s=electronics

those stand alone DVD burners burn to a different format and when you bring it to the PC it won't burn the same and sometimes won't even play the same! It's not your computer's dvd burner... it's the way the panasonic burns to the dvd! this is what I read about stand alone DVD burners. I am not an expert at this nor do I claim to be, but...... try this program and see if it will read the disk for conversion to DVD format:

good luck.......welcome to afterdawn

Thanks for the quick reply.

Shot thru the reviews on Amazon, doesn't bode well for the future huh? Had the recorder almost 12 months so it may die a death soon anyway.

Download the trial of convertxtodvd. DVD-rom on the computer does not recognise the disc as a dvd. When I tried to add video files with the converter got the message:-

'Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows'.

Put the disk in the Sony burner and tried to run the converter there and got the message:-

'F:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function.'

In both cases the 'select a media file' window for adding the file showed the drive as a cd drive not a dvd drive.

Give it to me straight. I'm stuck aren't I? These things are never going to load onto my hard drive.

noooooooo just need the correct program for that disk.... don't worry what windows says the disk is..... the new Vista Windows is supposed to correct minor mistakes like this. it's just windows. I'm sorry I don't have this situation or I would have remembered to save the thread.... I did read about this a couple of times...... I would go into the correct forum: http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/109
and ask your question about your panasonic recorded DVD and how to convert it to DVD format! I'm sure you'll get an better answer from people that know in that forum than over here! good luck.

Okay, so how stupid do I feel now? A bit? Loads? Nomore than that. Followed your thread to the DVD recorder forum. Put the panasonic number in and within two threads found the answer. Despite what the manual said that came with the recorder, I not only need to format the disk before I start, I also have to finalise it when I'm done, even though its a RW. Did this, stuck it in the PC and it works fine. According to the thread I can now download it onto my PC (got the software for that), muck about and take the adds out (got the software for that too) burn it to a +R (the only type the TV DVD player will take), put the -RW back in the recorder and reformat it and off I go again!!

Thank you so much for your help. I dont know how to close this thread, or do you just leave it here for other people to read?
