Mono sound is messing up my DVD-r's

I am trying to get all my old TV shows onto DVD, using my Panasonic DVD recorder. Unfortunately, they are so ancient, they were all recorded on mono VCR's, making the sound horrible when I record onto DVD-R and hear the sound through my sound system. I get that horrible mono buzz. Any suggestions on a way to fix this problem? Oh, and I have tried just turning off certain speakers of the 5 I have, but every speaker has a buzz behind the sound. Any help would help! THANKS!
