A friend of mine passed away back in May.
He left a bunch of DVD's dated back to 1970.
He transfered them from video tape to DVD form.
I am not computer savy, so please excuse me if I use the wrong terms.
I downloaded them onto my computer.
They came out in .VOB form.
I want to convert them to .MPEG so that I can burn them on to my DVD's and return the originals to his son.
Any simple and quick way to do this?
I appreciate all the help you can give me.
Thank You.

DVD media is pretty cheap, so if it was me, the first thing I would do is simply backup the DVD originals. I would use Nero and just copy each DVD. No conversions, no re-encoding, just copy the DVD.

When you say you downloaded them onto your PC and they came out as .VOB files I'd want to know a little bit more about what you did. Did you just copy and paste the files from the DVD discs to your hard drive? Did you use some video software to get them onto your PC?

If the original DVD discs are in DVD format (.VOB, .IFO, and .BUP files) then just copying the original DVD to a new DVD is the best approach. Nothing gets re-encoded and the quality is preserved.

If the original discs only contained .VOB files (not likely I'd guess) then I'd still just do a data copy to a new DVD and worry about re-authoring to a playable DVD later.

VOB files are essentially .MPEG files anyway. You don't need to do any converting. The main goal would be to get the video off the orginal discs onto new discs with no manipulation of the video. Just copy the discs. You can always re-author, if necessary, later.

Hi
The program you want is VOB2MPG http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=VOB2MPG It's freeware and will convert a VOBset in a few minutes. You need to have the Microsoft .NET framework installed, but Setup will install it for you if you don't already have it.

Thank you BOTH!
I tried the "Videohelp" link and it worked just fine.
I would have tried to copy/paste the files back onto my DVD but my "NEW" Dell DVD burner/player isn't recognizing my blank DVD's.
(Both DVDR and DVDRW)
I put the disk in, and a pop up says "put a disk in".
So....another problem.
I'll give Dell a call tonight.
Again, thank you both very much for such a quick and simple answewr :)

OK...my DVD burner is working. :)
Now for another question.
On one particular DVD I want to eliminate the beginning and the end of the DVD and keep the middle.
Can I do this?

You need an mpeg2 editor to do what you want. I wouldn't have any hesitation in recommending VideoReDo; frame accurate editing with no dodgy re-encoding- it cuts out the bits you want cutting out and saves to a new file in no time. Use VOB2MPG to create the mpeg, edit with VideoReDo, then re-author to create your new DVD. No re-encoding involved.

By the way, if it's only one DVD you want to edit VideoReDo has a decent trial period. Request a trial key and you'll have more than enough time to do what you require.

Happy to help. We've all been there! Incidentally, there's a very good how-to guide at the VideoReDo site if you're interested http://videoredo.seedwiki.com/wiki/video...411163795861723

Nice find. I've added it to the FAQ at the top of the DVD authoring forum.
