I'm a PS2-mod-ing noob so I'm really sorry if this is a question that has been answered before or if I'm breaking any rules ... but here's my situation:
I recently went to Thailand and purchased a ton of PS2 games that were really cheap so I'm assuming they are copies however some look like they are originals. Are these games not playing because they are region coded and are not made for my US PS2 or are they not playing because they are copies? Whatever the case is I don't want my money to go to waste as I can't return these games now that I'm back in the US and I was unable to check if they would play before buying because of the language barrier and because I didn't take my console with me so what would you suggest that I modify my PS2 with? (preferably something that doesn't require me to nullify my warranty or do any soldering). Thanks for your help!

Well it could really be either things stopping it from playing.
If you do not have a modded console it will not play games that are from another region. It will also not play them if they are copies made with a burner.
I see some copies that are printed to look like originals, depending on the size of the operation they could be using a disc press (very expensive) which would mean that the game would be just like the original and not a copy made with a burner.

My suggestion is that if you plan on learning the whole "back up" or "torrent" thing. And plan to aquire more games this way or via the internet then i would send your console to a reputable site and have a quality mod chip put in. Do research on the DMS4 Pro SE, Crystal Chip, and Matrix Infinity which are the top 3
some have unique features that may interest you other than just playing back ups. Like the DMS4 Pro SE and it's built in HD Loader program that will allow you to run a hard drive in the PS2 without extra software, and it's built in cheat device.
Or the Crystal Chip V1.1 that after you get it's correct BIOS will have an auto patching feature so that you can play back up copies online without having to manually patch the game.

OMG! Thanks for the very thorough answer! It really helped! My big concern was having to take apart the console and installing a chip into the hardware 'cause something may go wrong and I'll be out of a PS2. I also wasn't sure which chip would allow me to play copied games as I did not know how the games were copied so I should be safe with either of the products you mentioned, right? Where do I even start to look for people who can install them? Thanks again for your help!!
