OK, to cut a long story short, What are the best dvd-r's to buy in terms of..
1) Reliability
2) Compatibility
3) Value for money (although 1 and 2 more important)
I am debating on whether to go for the Clone discs (Ritek G04) Grade A as I've heard these are very good... and £1.50 each inc vat and postage - 99p exc vat and delivery to make things clear.. A bit pricy but maybe worth it...
I think we can all safely say Ritek is a must so that narrows it down a bit.. also Grade A, but which brand??
I have a Pioneer 105, presently use mirror? x4 59p each.. and for a reason (cos they are crap). Movies burn ok (x4) and play ok on standalone samsung a few times then mess up (about 50%).. Degrade a bit quick me thinks... I need reliability otherwise this dvd copying lark is a total waste of time and money!!!!! May as well buy new films on www.play.com for average of £9 each..
We need to collectively decide on the definitive number 1 dvd-r to buy and all buy it and forget the coasters.
btw anyone living in uk goto dvdsontap.com £10 a month unlimited rental, and they do send dvds out quick (free postage both ways)1 at a time (may get 8 or 9 a month) so not much over a quid each!! or £20mth 3 dvds at a time..
Cheers chaps

The ritek o4 (clonedisc a-grade) are excellent , using pioneer a05, x4 to burn, just done 50 and not a single coaster, work on ps2/xbox/pc, perfect playback, haven't had a chance to test on standalones but i don't expect a problem, definitely worth gettin a 25 spindle and checkin them for compaibilty with ur standalones, yes they are slightly more expensive than princo/bulkpaq but the bottomline..........they are worth the money :) ......................................Backups made using dvd decrypter/ dvd2one/ Nero v5.5.10.48.

as for the disks i would go for the riteks as above...
and as for dvdsontap great company so far that is, i have the 10 pounds a month and yeah the postage is free both ways and very fast.
genrally i watch the dvd the same day and send it back the same day, see no reason to keep it any longer unless i got an episode disk
if i do send the disks back the same day i can get about 3 a week they dont sent out dvds on sunday so depends on when u send them back...
think it is great for 10 pounds a month

OK Looks like Ritek dye wins..
Ritek also seem to favour clone or traxdata as a brand, lets hope oriphus's test comes up trumps on the traxdata. (Only snag is x1 speed on Pioneer 105's even with firmware upgrade)
Cheers

www.blankdiscshop.co.uk states that the traxdata discs (1-2x speed - 99p ones) only go at x1 speed on pioneer 105's even with firmware upgrade. Is this true? Does anyone use these discs at x2 speed on pioneer 105 with firmware upgrade? If they do I'm putting my order for 50 in tomorrow :)

I've never used that media and wouldn't recommend it because its probably crap. But if you but the hacked firmware in your drive, it can burn all 1X media at 2X.

I wouldnt' say traxdata are crap - See below:
{DV 372} Traxdata Branded 1-2x 4.7gb DVD-R in slim Glider DVD case
One of the most reliable discs on the market.
This high quality 'A' grade DVD-R is manufactured by Ritek, and is branded with the TRAXDATA logo (Ritek own the brand name, so you can bet they would only ever use their best discs for this product!)
This disc comes in a slim DVD case with the new "Glider" system for holding the disc in place.
This disc was voted 5 out of 5 by What Video magazine.
Suggested for use on the following hardware: Pioneer 103/A03, Pioneer 104/A04, Pioneer 105/A05/, Pioneer A/106,Toshiba, Panasonic E20, E30, HS2, Sony DRU500a, Sony PS2, X-Box
ADVDINFO: .RITEKG..03.
We want to make it completely clear that this disc will only write at 1x under Pioneer firmware revisions, other manufactures allow the discs to write at 2x. It will only write at 2x under Pioneer firmware revision 1.31 for the A/104.
Shipping cost will be calculated and displayed by the website before you finalise your order.
Price: £1.08 Including VAT at 17.5%
Note - Won't write at x2 on a 105, 104 it will with firmware upgrade.
Oh sod it - I'm going for the clone riteks ( from ..99p EXC VAT,delivery - about £1.60 each all in for 25), expensive but good like everything else in life.. Either that or verbatim which no one can argue with..

I agree. Traxdata discs are Riek premium range. Ritek keep their best discs for the traxdata range. Anyone who says Traxdata dscs are not any good, doesnt really know what they are talking about :-)

Yes I would use ritek every time
As for the ritek from blankdiscshop in the glider cases DO NOT BUY THEM!!!!!!!
I orderd a few they were all shrinked wrapped and when opened they had scraches on them{maybe due to the glider case??}one even had finger marks all over it and fluff on.
Cleaned the fingermared one still burnt a coaster, the second works okay but still had slight scraches on. Didnt want to risk anymore so i sent them back
I give blankdiscshop credit I am having them exchanged with no fuss and i am pleased with there response
pioneer 104 firmware 1.40 only burned at 1x

You're wrong again! I said pioneer 105! lol
I've been onto www.blankdiscshop and they do confirm that theses discs will burn at x2 speed on a 105 with latest firmware but I've yet to try. Not that i don't trust salesmen hehe thanks anyway sly :)
Slave , you've just made my life a lot more complicated lol sounds like you got a bad batch! I think I'll risk it or maybe go for the x4 speed ones ritek go4 instead? Anyone else had similar experiences with these traxdata?

it doesn't matter, the a05 and 105 are the same drive, with the same firmware! And i have burned 1x ritek made media at 2x (one time it got up to 4.3x for a little while) with the firmware i suggested.

The original poster stated his main goals were:
1) Reliability
2) Compatibility
3) Value for Money, but 1 + 2 are more important (to summarize)
Recommending Ritek G03 burnt at 2x on a 105/A05 does not agree with 1 + 2. Maybe as some people say, the Traxdata G03 are somehow better than average, but there have been more than enough Nero CD Speed and K Probe PI / PO (parity) tests that I've seen (plus the ones Ive run myself) that show that you get more errors at 2x on G03 discs than at 1x. Do 2x burns work at all? Yes. Do they have more problems towards the end (outer edge of disc)? Yes. You choose.
G03s are still good discs, but if the users MAIN OBJECTIVE is reliability and compat., I suggest burning at 1x on a 105. If you want to burn any faster, get Ritek G04s.

I disagree, i have burned over 50 movies and games on g03's at 2x, with the pioneer 105 and never had any problems.
