Ok, I realise if that this question has been answered in peices through the forum but I would like a little assurance.
I'm looking for the the best compression utility to squeeze my dvds into 1 dvd-r but:
I copied Oceans Eleven with Decrypt-DVD2one-Nero and noticed a little skipping and a little colour bleeding (i think its called ghosting).
Is there any other program that offers better visual quality compression that DVD2One?
Also I notice a lot of people mention compression percentage and ratios. Where do you see this option, in my version of DVD2one it doesnt even tell me what the compression percentage is.
Advice appreciated.

Here are some comparissons that you can work with?
(keep in mind that this is only what I work with and may not be true for everyone)
>>>
If you are concerned with:
1) having (exactly) the same quality as your original DVD
2) keeping all menus and extras with the main feature
3) creating a backup of an episodic (tv programs per season)
4) having a ?one-stop? software to back up your dvd that includes reading and burning
and if you don?t mind:
1) having an 11-second ?Warning, this is a backup? screen before your movie
2) fitting a single dvd?s main feature into two disks
3) not being able to make a backup of your copy (as opposed to making a back up of your original)
then I would recommend:
DVDxCopy

If you are concerned with:
1) backing up only the main movie (forgoing its menus and extras)
2) fitting the main feature in only one disc
3) having a fast transcoding program (arguably the fastest)
4) having a ?one-stop? software to back up your main movie that includes reading and burning
and if you don?t mind:
1) a transcoded backup (some quality loss)
2) having an 11-second ?Warning, this is a backup? screen before your movie
3) not being able to make a backup of your copy (as opposed to making a back up of your original)
4) not being able to make a backup of your episodics (tv programs per season)
5) not having menus
then I would recommend:
DVDxCopy Express

Oops.. I probably should have just posted the link to the first thread I posted this in.
Sorry about that.
But in response to your other questions:
1) The skipping that you noticed in the movie might be from other sources. For example, perhaps your dvd player isn?t too agreeable with dvdr media. Or maybe your dvdr media isn?t the greatest to use. Or maybe even it?s your source disc that has already been corrupted. Check to see if it isn?t one of these. As far as I know, DVD2One remains to be one of the more popular compression methods that are being used by many because of its speed as well as for the quality that it produces. Unless of course you have a huge tv (as opposed to our 32-inch ones) which might more easily catch the little ?color bleeding? that you speak of. Add to this the fact that perhaps you used DVD2One to backup in full-disc mode. This might also figure in with the less-than-spectacular visual quality compression that you notice.
If nothing else, go ahead and try out the other compression programs out there like DVDxCopy/ Express, DVD Shrink, and Clone DVD.
2) As for your other question about compression percentage and ratios, you might have been lurking in threads about DVD Shrink. It is the main program that lets you choose how much you compress each backup movie with predetermined percentages and ratios. Go ahead and try it out to see if this program will work better for you.

I'd like to thank An6Lo for the most comprehensive and concise explanation I have yet seen. I am new to this forum and to DVD burning, and am looking for information.
Does anyone use (or recommend)Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD? It was recommended by a friend but it is too pricy for my blood. Unless the consensus overwhelmingly recommmends it. I am looking for quality at low cost (free - if possible)

Pinnacle aint my favourite, i have it here:
I would much rather use the DVD Shrink as suggested since it is free. An6elo's information is very good and based completely for newbies. In actual fact, combination programs can be off better used than a recommendation of a single program based on a certain opinion. However, you will learn that as time progresses and your back up collection grows.

I agree with Oriphus in that once you start getting used to backing up your DVDs, you will tend to and eventually choose one program over the other based on your needs.
And yes, the list I compiled is really for newbies as I was once one myself not too long ago. :D

Nice to meet all of you.
I am a Noob to making DVD's, but no noob to Forums or Computers ;-}
A long time customer whose system I am upgarding this week with a new MB and Pioneer DVR-AO5U VDV-R/RW Drive wants some flexibity in how he backs up his DVD movies.
I love DVD Shrink.
What a great free tool!
But the included Pioneer CD Maker app is a joke.
Is there not a free (or like $10) app to simply take the directory of .VOB .bup and .ifo file DVD Shrink creates and burn it to his Pioneer drive?
Currently I have the Clone DVD trial loaded.
Great program.
But as above, I can't see paying $40 for it.
The customer does not need all of it's features.
All he needs is way to take the base files and burn them on a DVD-R anything can play.
Thanks for any help you can give.
And besides all the ad's, nice content rich site guys.

I think you misunderstood...
I have the tool to GET the .vob files, what I don't have is the tool to write the given directory of those files to his Pioneer DVD-R/RW drive, and from what I see, DVD Encrypter does not Write DVD's, it read them.

No I understood you, it writes them also.
Now you can directly burn the image to a recordable DVD. Insert an empty DVD-R/W or DVD+R/W in your DVD Writer. In DVD DVDDecrypter:
1. Select Mode -> ISO -> Write
2. Open your created .ISO file.
3. Select your DVD Writer
4. Burn the DVD by clicking the HD>DVD-image (test on a DVD-RW or DVD+RW first).

With DVDxCopy is it possible to forgo the extras on some movies to fit it onto one disk? Or do all DVD's get burned completely and take 2 discs? The extra features and all are really important to me on some movies but on a few others I just want the main feature and not to waste 2 discs. Is it possible to use it like Express if I want to?

Well shoot...
I really REALLY like DVD Shrink.
Fast, easy, free, I can remove the garbage, and my PC DVD player program will play the movies from HD.
I also have several movies copied to HD with that format.
But, I guess I'll try out your suggestion tomorrow.

If you can get Record Now or Nero, you wont have to make an ISO to burn. You can do it in a VIDEO_TS folder.
